Have a look online for helmet reviews so you have an idea of what you're after. Try on as many as you can 'cos different makes of helmet might fit you better than others. Make sure that it fits snugly, not so tight that it is uncomfortable and not so loose that it wobbles about on yer head. Buy the best you can afford...you get what you pay for really. Dunno what your budget is but Arai and Shoei always get my vote from past experiences. Finally, whatever you decide to get, look after it cos it just might save yer life one day (don't mean to be negative).

Bearskin is out of the question...you'll spend all your time cleaning bloody flies out of it, and the Aerodynamics are crap...
Caberg aren't bad, they're relatively cheap as well....depends how much you want to spend..
SHOEI and ARAI are very good, but then are a bit expensive...Get the best you can afford is the bottom line and make sure it fits properly...not like your Bone dome..

I've always used SHARK. I use that brand for my road helmets and my off-road helmets too. I find them very comfy, not too expensive and quite a wide and stylish range too. But as above, find a good fit for yourself. Stretch your budget as much as you can, your head is the most inportant part of your body should the worst happen.

Safety first. Make sure its CE approved and if your going racing, make sure it has a gold badge on. Get the best you can afford, a good quality helmet always lasts in my opinion. One thing to be aware of is all the helmet sizes between manufacturers are different. An Arai medium isn't the same as a Shark, or Nolan. Try before you buy

An ACU Gold sticker is useful if you want to do trackdays. If it was my bonce I wouldn't touch Nitro with a bargepole infact I'd rather wear a beanie.

Any helmet that passes the ECE test automatically gets an ACU gold sticker unless it has fins that stick out more than 4cm, then it undergoes further testing, but otherwise it'll get one automatically. It doesn't mean anything really.

All the above is spot on advice.
I'll only add one thing - PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE GOVT "SHARP" SAFETY RATINGS.
Sorry for shouting, but I really don't trust this new safety rating scheme yet.
Just get the best fitting, most expensive lid that your budget will allow.

as above get the best you can afford.
pay *a lot* of attention to the *fit*. you want to make sure it is snug and does not move around much when you have got it on. a good shop will advise on this.
different makes have slightly different shell shapes too, so you may find that one make just fits better than others.
on the whole light lids are more expensive as they use more exotic materials to achieve the same or superior strenght.
avoid gimicky helmets, test lifting the visor with your left hand-you will be doing this alot.
see if you can get an anti misting visor liner thrown in for free -fog city are good -this will be useful when the weather turns cold
of course if you find one that fits and you don't like your dealer, you can make a note of the size and get it a bit cheaper online
