My XR-1000 scores 3 out of five on Sharp.
      #27875 - 13/06/2008 00:33

You guys seen the Sharp website is up? and there are a lot of shitty scores for a lot of "good" helmets.

the Raid 2 Shoei scores better than the higher end xr1000 for instance... my helmet is shit apparently... or "average" anyway. Lol - at least I did not fork out for the 500 quid rx7 corsair which got the same score!

What you guys think of this? Is it bullshit? Or what...

Most racers use rx7s and have big enough accidents without suffering any head injuries... what gives. Feelings about the ratings?

I used a RX7 when I had a biggie at Brands I certainly believe it save me from any serious damage, altho some might disagree.
As for the test I don't know how they are conducted but different manufacturers use differing technologies for dissipating the forces with some preferring a stiffer shell and some a softer shell using the liners in different ways.

Well the only biggie I had was when I was much younger before I could afford a decent helmet and it was a Lafe. And that turned out ok.

I wonder if they dont take into account the "ear area" impact how the helmets would score?

Yeah I saw the article...But I wanted to know what actual people thought about how there helmets faired ...i.e. How do you feel now that your 550 quid helmt scores lower than a peice of shit 60 quid helmet. And yeah..so the test is bullshit according to the companies who scored badly and its unrealistic.. wtf! Why isnt someone changing it or stopping it being published then?

I haven't even bothered looking at the ratings. I'm lucky. I've seen the R&D departments at Shoei and Shark, I've seen what they do to test their lids (and I'm sure the other big brands are more or less the same).

Get this. There is NO chinbar test in the Sharp test. So an open-faced lid could, in theory, get a better rating than your full-face lid. How can you have confidence in a test protocol that failed to incorporate a chin bar test?

In addition, testing a lid at five specific points makes it easy for helmet manufacturers to build a lid to pass a test.

Why no penetration test? If my bike lands on my head I don't want a footpeg in my brain pan.

If your lid doesn't fit you properly then it really doesn't matter how many stars it got, does it? Did inspectors factor that in when they were analysing fatal head wounds?

I'm sure some good will come of the test, but I'm not changing anything. Yet.

My Arai fits perfectly is light and comfortable to wear for extended periods, also a previous model has passed the ultimate test which for me no amount of laboratory testing will replicate.
After reading the article the I agree that the test is open to abuse by manufacturers.
I expect to see Nitro helmets achive 5 stars very soon.
It would be nice to see random penatration tests altho I think most current decent helmets will perform their job well in this area, I trust mine with my life and feel confident that I will be as well protected as is possible and no amount of awarded stars will change that.
Long live ARAI.

My TiTech scored 4 Stars, so that's ok.

They decided not to include a chin bar test because the ECE2205 one is good enough, and they didn't include penetration because apparently this isn't a big source of deaths.

Hmm. Apparently there will be a chinbar test incorporated at some point in the future. So a lid with a current five-star rating with a shit chin bar will be downgraded? And vice-versa?

And, as for penetration not being 'a big source' of deaths, well, I'd quite a lid that could cope with a footpeg or bar end.

And what percentage of deaths caused by shit lids are actually caused by ill-fitting lids?

Yeah, but how many deaths are caused by someone headbutting a foot peg or bar end?

That's just what I've heard anyway.

As we all know the most protective lid is the one that fits best.

I've seen bike and rider getting caught up and tumbling along/rag dolling into the kitty litter before and if I'm tangled up, I don't want my head stopping a footpeg. I'm with the idiot on this one. Give us a fuggin' penetration test!

I think this Sharp test is a bunch of monkey wank.. unfortunately Iīve had a recent off where a dozy cow crossed 5 lanes horizontally, not diagonally, and rammed me my new HP2 into a parked car and set me flying a good 10-15 meters where I landed on my head (I guess it weighs a bit)which was safely wrapped inside my Arai RX7 Corsair. Iīm alive and well, I can walk again after having serious shit with my knees and ankles.

I didnīt walk away from this one but the ambulance ride was nice.

A year ago I had a serious off on a race track and my noggin bounced on my other RX7 Corsair.. I walked away from that one.

Conclusion, I wonīt buy another brand of helmet again as long as I can afford an Arai. If I canīt Iīll simply save to get another one as I donīt trust anything else for my head.

Arai is the only make I'd put on my head as (a).my Arai undoubtably saved my life and (b). I must have an Arai shaped head as they seem to fit me better than the other makes.
