http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/hampshire/7666943.stm This is not only a tragic waste but shows how the law is a farce. The driver was 93???? I would like to see which Docter signed to say he was not a risk on the road- He was arrested for causing death etc etc. Any bets of the outcome-to old to do time and have his licence taken away till he passes another test???? This really does make my blood boil

What a tragedy, there is never a good time to die,but this man has probably worked all his life, with the last few years looking forward to,and planning his retirement. and then it is snuffed out by some senile old coffin dodger who probably couldn't see past the end of his bonnet.

We had a similar thing about 2 weeks ago in Cwmbran...91 year old man mounted the kerb and ran over two old ladies...killing them both...
Arrested and charged with causing death by dangerous driving.....
It does make you wonder , should there be some sort of re test once you reach a certain age??

While the individuals aren't blameless, you've got to wonder at a system that supposedly says they are safe to drive. Mind you there's plenty of younger drivers around that are just as bad. Maybe the whole driving test needs looking at.

I agree with a re-test and/or a medical once reaching a certain age. But what should that age be? is the question really. Taxi drivers, Truck drivers and other professional drivers have to take regular medicals etc.. over a certain age, why not the average driver/biker?

Me too. My mother is 83 but really shouldn't have been driving for at least a decade. She is just lucky to have got away with it. But her poor car is chokka with dings, scrapes, lumps and bumps. And who knows if she has caused accidents with her erratic and unpredictable driving. I won't go in the car with her. A re-test every two years after 80 and every year after 90. I would even say a re-test at 70 and 75. It wouldn't need to be a full test. Just enough to see if they are still competent. And 100% definitely a regular medical test.

My dad is "only" 71, and has driven for all of his adult life the same way. He cannot (or will not) read the road, the traffic, the conditions and the other traffic, and try to predict what might happen on the road, and avoid it. Instead, he drives as fast as he can get away with, and reacts to situations as they happen. Which he got away with for years when he had the eyesight and reactions of a younger man. But for the past 5 or 6 years he's had the reaction speed of a pensioner! Doesn't have many accidents, but he's seen hundreds.......
