From what I've heard locally in Gwent(great roads, too many cops) Gwent Police traffic dept have got an unmarked Mitsubishi EVO 8 in Black, tinted windows the works, Prowls along the M4 corridor and the biking roads around Abergavenny...not seen the thing myself don't want to either..! does anyone else have any knowledge of this sneaky shite!!!

I heard from a good source (a mechanic who prepped cop cars) that the unmarked cars regularly change number plates between them, but I'd been keen to know type and colour as well as any other identifying marks we can rely on as we can overtake in a safe and responsible manner.
Anyone got real info on aerials, garage ident on number plates missing type stuff?

Warwickshire poliss have a dark green scooby doo Impreza that I have spotted several (3) times in the last 3 or 4 months on the B4100 (the Leamington to Gaydon Road)....each time he had someone pulled over.
And yes, swapping plates MUST be illegal.

Unmarked police cars are easy to spot - five-door bog-standard saloons, one-or-two years old, conservative colour, driven very precisely by a couple of square haircuts and with a windscreen full of gadgets. Often within relax-and-boot-it range of a marked car.
How many clues do you need ?

Yup they do change number plates-so look for LACK of dealer details on the bottom of the plate-rear winow etc.also more than one areil(???)Bristol had Imprezers(biggest area for autocrime. Kent use Saarbs(mettalic blue and a bla  ck one) and sneaky unmarked Hondas(bikes WITH Cameras forward and back-that touring bike ahead may not be what you think!!! Im trying to find out what sussex use but they DO use helicopters in May til Sept on biking roads to hastings and Brighton

Err No Al its not illegal-its called "ghosting" Law enforcment agencys ONLY can do it(read Police-Army etc).same car with 3 or 4 registration numbers. However it should only be used for certain spheres in crime fighting,in particular Drug Squad(Serious Crime squads) when carrying out covert survelliencee(so the bad guys dont recognise the cars by reg number) The boys from Hereford also do it(SAS to common folk)

They also HAVE to display a no smoking sign as it's classed as a place of work. See a no smoking sign in a dark saloon with a well dressed gent up front and back right off.

Lots of police cars don't have too many aerials. They are internal, inside the roof and that like some cars don't have any aerials for the AM/FM radio. It's the same thing.

He's right Al, we used to do it when i was in Northern Ireland. Most of our vehicles had 'Ghost plates' because most of them were used for regular jobs in the same areas on similar routes so were easy to pick out if you took notice.
The arial too (antenna to be precise - an arial will only recieve, but an antenna will transmit and recieve)...as said above, cop cars need to communicate so they will have at least one additional antenna and this can be longer than standard car arials so is easy to spot. Of course it could just be some sad git with a CB radio tuning in to 'fat truckers chat FM' but its better to be safe than sorry eh?!

thats also true BigHam, good point actually, antenna's and arials are getting smaller and smaller these days so could be harder to spot.

North Kent (M20) use Volvo estates. Not very original. Easy to spot with the 4 ariels....sorry...antennas on the roof. There's a traffic depot just over the road form where I work.

Well I'll consider myself corrected. 'Ghosting', eh? They've got it all going on. Slags.
Although while I can see it being useful in the bandit country of South Armagh in the 1980s, it seems excessive on the roads here. I bet 99 per cent of folks pulled by an unmarked car wouldn't have spotted a fluorescent Hummer on chromed 22" rims following them, never mind cross-referencing the plates of a dark blue Octavia vRS with one they saw the other week.
Still, if it makes them feel more 'agency' then fair enough...

Another way to spot them is that they are always clean.
At least here in Aus.
And here they are always Aus(ish) cars. Ford or Holden and always a late model fast version. (5+ litre engine)
