OK guys, I have setup one of those online petitions on the PM's website. I'm campaigning to educate dumb drivers on the legality of bike filtering in traffic. I need you guys to pop by and sign up. The link is as follows:
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/driver-awareness/
oh, and don't forget to tell your friends!
Thanks.

If you can edit it I would suggest you check the spelling of "raise". It might give a better impression.
(Do I get the job yet Ed.)
I'm also thinking there are more important biker issues to be petitioning about but good on ya for doing something about what pisses you off.
We're gonna have a big rally in Melbourne soon against the fascist and ignorant Victorian State Government. Disrupt traffic, get on the telly. It's gotta be good to get some attention on us. Unfortunately it's a three day ride (at least) for me so I might not go.

Lightweight!
In the fight against oppression, distance should be no object.
I'd be there. If I lived in Aus. And if it wasn't raining. And if the missus said it was OK. Oh, and if it wasn't too cold. And I really do need a new rear tyre first. And I've got this backache, too.
Up the Revolution.

I've singed but really think we should also be responsible for our own actions and be aware that cars may not be expecting us to carry out what is essentially a risky maneuver.

I have to agree-it is a dodgy manouvre that I now only undertake(cuse the pun) when the traffic is absolutely stationary. Leaving Donington years ago and on the m/way traffic was slow moving(about 5 to 10 mph) and I recall being taken aback by the number of drivers who were deliberately moving out to stop bikes filtering-particually since some of them no doubt were race fans leaving Donington and were clearly very frustrated

The way I see it is that if traffic is moving and you "filter" thats undertaking which is both illegal and stupid I watched an R6 on the M11 Saturday as we were driving back from the MX track "filtering" between the outside and middle lane and TBH couldn't belive the stupidity, traffic was constantly jockeying for lanes as they do when you get a tailback, but Rossi was oblivious just intent on weaving in and out.

Do we think the undertaking law is reasonable? They don't have it in the US (and they're hardly the best drivers in the world) without too much fuss.
It would only mean you had to check in your left as well as right mirrors before changing lanes - hardly an onerous task. You'd think you'd be looking behind you fairly regularly anyway.
It would stop that brain-dead '60mph in the middle lane' crowd being a problem I guess.

That's a tough one, I have no problem with undertaking when someone is hogging the outside lane but am happy with with the law as reagards to passing on the right otherwise.

Fantastic!
So to abide by the law, you have to go out and cause as many accidents as possible?
Sorry, couldn't resist.

Why are they twats if you are comming up on the nearside? I can understand if they go from the inside or middle lanes out if they don't use their mirrors then yes they are twats but one of the safest ways to ride is to assume you are invisible especially when filtering. Yes I do filter but I'll take responsibilty for my own actions and understand the risk involved, and like immy I keep it for staionary traffic mostly. I sure as hell ain't going to blame another road user for my choice, well depending on circumstances.

I agree with and disagree with a Lot of the arguments here.
There is a time and a place for filtering, it's known in the Military as Situational Awareness.
Stationary Traffic , no probs just be aware of your speed and who's doing what where!
Through motorway traffic at speed( As Chappers mentioned) weaving from lane to lane, pisses people off and the potential for getting killed is tremendous..

If we were invisible then filtering would be much easier than it is. That was one of the reasons I didn't like the copulsory headlights thing. We have that in Aus. now but I'm not sure about the UK. I have and will continue to filter through moving traffic up to about thirty mph on dual carriageways and motorways. It is the hardest I ever concentrate when on a bike and have certain rules which I follow. Relative speed to traffic is important as is being especially careful when passing gaps that a car could dive into. I believe I have developed an instinct for when a car is thinking of moving over. I would say that it is one of the highest skills on a motorbike and wouldn't recommend inexperienced riders try it. So far I have never been taken out, or even close, though once, long long ago I nearly got squashed between two lorries.

I do as well....no probs at all...I used to commute in and out of London on the M4, I always filtered through the traffic if it was crawling along at 30mph..It's when you get the nutter who's zipping between lanes in and out of traffic that's moving at 70 - 80 mph pissing off every man and his dog...Not big, not clever! And Car drivers and the general public tar us all with the same brush.
