Jumping out of gear (sort of)
      #31129 - 28/08/2008 18:39

I have a 2000 RRY (929) track bike. Up until my last session today it's been fine.

It now jumps out of gear after selecting 3rd (I think). I lose all drive, the rev counter red lines initially, the oil light comes on for about 4 or 5 seconds before going out and the rev counter then drops to 0 revs briefly (even though the engine is still running). Select a different gear and it seems to sort itself out until next selecting that gear again when exactly the same thing happens. Obviously on the track it's being revved hard at the time.

I spoke to Superbike's own Dave Smith (thanks) today who said he'd suspect the selector dogs/forks but any other ideas or suggestions much appreciated. It's the oil light/rev counter bit that confuses me, unless it's some sort of diagnostic indication.

Many thanks in advance.

Hey, you heard it from the expert.......

Once had a CBR600 which did exactly the same thing in 2nd gear. It turned out to be........... badly worn drive dogs.

Thanks XX did that include the strange oil light/rev counter issue as well?

I have to say the rev counter/oil light thing is a bit strange, and I don't recall it being a problem on the CBR.

I'm just wondering whether the engine was actually cutting out, hence the oil light and zero revs and then as I was putting it into another gear I was bump starting the bike without realising it. It was a busy track and TBH I was more concerned about getting out of the way than trying to diagnose the problem or making notes on symptoms.

Thing is it was then running okay until I got to either the front or back straight and started accelerating hard again, and my first thought at the time was I'd missed a gear. By the 3rd or 4th time though I'd got the message and trundled back to the pits.

Does anyone know if they are designed to cut out if the revs overwhelm the limiter maybe? I thought that was what the limiter was for but I don't want to go pulling the clutch off to get to the selector dogs if that's not the problem. Other than the problem as described the bike runs okay but the oil light/rev counter symptom seems strange.
