One for all you 'Blade riders.
A mate recently traded up from a 2000 Blade to an 05 model. He loves it, but is asking me about the unusually tall 1st gear. He reckons he needs twice the revs of his old bike to pull away cleanly. Now, I've never owned a Fireblade, and only briefly ridden a couple (2000 model, and very recently the 08) so I'm hardly an authority.
I think (and you guys can correct me) that one of the '06 mods was a couple of extra teeth on the rear sprocket, so maybe this was an issue?
Anyone know how many teeth? Anyone ridden both models and can confirm the gearing issue? I haven't ridden the bike yet, but to be honest, I don't think it'd make much difference if I did - my only point of comparison is my bloody Blackbird!

If you want to check or change gearing use Gearing commander You can play with gearing on your bike and see what it should do if you have the power to pull the 20 tooth front and 35 tooth rear... It is really good and I have used it to sort out the gearing on my little 600 so we can get it up to get the highest speed it will pull at a specific RPM. The 600 has 120 BHP and revs to 15,500 so we set the gearing stock front and +2 rear for 170MPH at the limiter. With the speedo healer calibrated using GPS we had a max of 171MPH which is bloody close.

Thanks, MP.
With a little digging around, I've discovered that the only difference between '05 and '06 models was 2 extra teeth on the rear sprocket (from 40 to 42) which (if I've used the Gearing Commander right, will lose about 6-8 mph at 14500rpm in top gear?), which is what I'm going to recommend my mate starts at. Looking at the chain pitch/no of links for both models, this shouldn't require any alteration of chain length - anyone knows any different, let me know....... please, before I fuck his bike up!

My 'blades a 2000 but I've got a 15 & 16 front and a 42 & 44 rear. All combinations of the above will fit on the same chain if that helps.
Obviously there's more adjustment left with some combinations than others though.

It is a really helpful site and if you play with the RPM numbers and set the "lowest" RPM figure higher then it seems to work back down to stock peak power. The GSXR 600 has peak power higher than the site claims so I set the number at the rev limit and it worked back down to "peak" power. Odd work round but if you have a tuned motor it works. OK it will not tell you how high you can gear the bike but if you have an idea it will pull higher gearing at least you can change it closer to a speed you want to try and pull just by changing the gearing figures and RPM figures. It also tells you the difference if you try different tyre profiles which is a bonus.
