Get your image and host it online at either:
<a href="www.imageshack.us" target="_blank">Imageshack</a>
Or
<a href="www.photobucket.com" target="_blank">photobucket</a>
Then copy the direct URL to the image and click the IMAGE button in the instant mark up area.

Or simply put the link between these:
[image][/image]
If this happens:

Then you have gone wrong somewhere.
Or you can post a forum friendly link directly from photobucket or imageshack.(Thanks Biggles)
Hope this is helpful

Great stuff! This should be a sticky in FAQ's
You might want to add that you can copy a Forum friendly link for the image in photo bucket and then paste as you have described.

So if I can do images from PhotoBucket why cant I upload an avatar from the same Photobucket? It seems I have to store a piccy on local disc- reduce it then upload it on to here. So why 2 different imaging systems??

I think it is because the "system" copies your avatar for frequent use. Your avatar appears on all your posts everywhere at once. This is also why it needs to be small data wise.
Where as the pic of your latest sprocket enhancement is just referenced once or twice on a post.

Yep, pretty much right biggles, some forums do allow you to use an avatar hosted elsewhere, but they still have to be small for the reasons above.
The avatar we upload is hosted locally on the SB server.

you mean avatar, needs to be 80x80 pixels and less than 10,000kb then on the avatar options click browse and find the piccy on your puter click on it then click save and it should upload.

I have a Macintosh and it often doesn't seem to work but then I tried it on another browser and the new one was there. Back on the original and it was the old one. Even on my posts. Bizzare.
Gifs seem to work better for me.

OK skidqueen, this should work......
Use photobucket or some other image host to resize your chosen piccie to avatar size, 80x80 or less. Save it as a .gif image somewhere in your 'puter where you can find it.
On this here forum, click 'user options' at the top of the screen, find the main configuration section, and next to personal information, click 'edit'.
Scroll down to the avatar bit, click 'browse' and find your pic. Click 'upload your avatar', then click change. Click 'submit' at the bottom of the screen. Job done.
Unless I've got it wrong.
Again.

I have had the exact same thing. The old avatar appears *but* after a few hours the new one showed up. Firefox as a browser seems to work better with the Forum on the Mac.

Just found out that for once the people at Apple have used non standard code in their browser, or rather made their browser not respond to some old standard code.
As a response to a security issue, apparently the Javascript used to make rollovers work was deemed insecure (in Explora would you believe), so they changed how Safari responds-this has effected all kinds of things, not only rollovers, and not only Safari.
Anything that uses certain aspects of javascript on the mac at the mo might well suffer. Apparently Quicktime VR software has been severely affected by this move too.

If javascript security is an issue for anyone use firefox and download "NoScript" as an add on. Then you can pick and choose what sites you let run java scripts.

I have no probs with JS - it is the black hats who have been abusing some JS savvi apps. Hence the folk at Apple (and now Mircosoft) starting to reduce the way that JS is and can be used.

They've been nagged so many times to get a decent forum architecture so I'm guessing it's not going to happen.
This one is the crappiest working forum I visit. Thankfully the content makes up for it.

It's all to do with storage and bandwith I expect. Although I can't see how avatars would matter that much to be honest.

That it is. However, I twigged something the other day - it isn't just Superbike, check out the online presence of other IPC mags. Everything from the knitting mags to the horsey mags uses the same shitty UBBThreads software, presumably all implemented on one central server somewhere, and centrally administered (for quite small values of administered, obviously). So, if the denizens of "Braying hoorays on future glue sticks Monthly" or "Joy of Knitting Weekly" know no better and are quite happy with what they have, our minority seething discontent is rather irrelevant. Also, the pervasive nature of UBBThreads and the way it has been integrated into the various different magazine webshites would make the project to roll something better out and migrate all the data across to it a bit more of a challenge (a complwete bastard actually) and an expensive, high-risk one at that.
SO in other words, IPC's Web Knobbers fucked up when they chose a forum tool, and now they (and we) are realistically stuck with it for as long as it doesn't seriously shit itself and start costing money to keep running...

If I had six months sharing a cell with you on remand, with nothing to do other than discuss how poorly IPC is managing its digital functions, we still wouldn't get to the end of it.
One of the main problems appears to me to be a strategic decision to, essentially, write all the software we need ourselves, in-house. This is good because we have control over it. But it's bad because it all takes ages and we're a media company not a software company.
Also, we're ultimately owned by a US firm, which is very sensitive about security and 'compliance' online. So anything we'd like to do on this website has to be given the nod by clever folks across the pond. It seems that this doesn't ever make anything happen with any haste.
But. Apparently there is some new forum software coming along. I'm not holding my breath...
