I used to be a committed red wine man but when I met my girlfriend, she converted me to white. So here are some favourite white wines:
Casillero del Diablo - Chilean, lovely Vino Torres Esmerelda - Spanish, very fragrant The Wolf Blass yellow labels are nice too
And, of course, Bollinger for champagne darlings...

The top pub in Byron Bay. Right next to the center of action and the best part of the beach with a great outdoor section to watch all the bikini clad girls and enjoy the sea breeze and watch the dolphins and whales (that are left)...
There's lovely.
Coppers Sparkling ale on draught which is not only nice but also not full of evil chemicals.
And for a VERY fine tipple Coopers Vintage Ale. Only made every three years or so as it takes that long. (though of course that is complete crap as they could start it every year so it must be a marketing ploy)

Just back from Sunday lunch at our nearest pub (next village!) With this thread in mind, I thought I'd be a little adventurous, so ordered a bottle od Aussie Chiraz I'd never heard of. Lovely! Wife didn't like it, father-in-law wasn't keen, so had the bottle mostly to myself. What was it? I'm finding it hard to remember exactly after almost a whole bottle, but I think it was called Murphy's Big River - Murray River.... or something. Very nice, anyway.

Isnt Banrock Station an aussie wine? I had it ages ago and it was quite nice-try some hungarian wines if you can-Egri Bikabér(bulls blood) but get only from the Eger area-robust full red(dry) very tasty. White wine-if you can get it is the "Tokaj" it comes in ratings of sweetness-No 6 being the sweetest

Anything by Brains...Superb, it's like Caffrey's but better!
Crow Valley bitter, Brewed in Cwmbran by a very small brewery (you can order online as well)
Thatchers Ciders, 3 litre box of Organic cider can be bought in ASDA,not fizzy like Strongbow but tastes just like Apple juice 7.4% lovely in the Summer. Do various other Organics in bottles as well, not cheap, but worth every penny.
Dortmunder DAB lager. 5 litre kegs in ALDI. I used to drink it in Germany, very nice!
Most Aussie Reds, Wolf Blass, Yellowtail, Snappygum, Burke's Rest all good.

I'm just in the process of getting all the kit and I'm going to be brewing my own.
Doing Ale, and Cider and probably some Guinness type stuff and also I'll try and do a few bottles of the Vino for the lady of the Manor.
If in a few weeks I have an insane drunken ramble, you'll know the brew is good!

If you want a good Sunday lunch with nice beer, try the Railway Inn in Abertillery, opposite Tesco, on the bend before the lights.
You may have to ring up to book, but it's worth it, Kim the Landlady is superb, I go in, in bike gear all the time, nobody bats an eye, apart from in the summer when I got fuck all on underneath my leathers
Just tell her when you go there that Shiny recommended it, you'll have a bit of a surprise!

The old farmer I bought my farm off in the French Pyrenese (it's a long story and a while ago now) used to make plum schnapps/brandy from the trees in his/my fields. That was the finest spirit I have ever drunk by far. So smooth, sweet, and very strong. He introduced me to it on the day we agreed to buy the farm by pouring it over a lump of sugar in a small glass. Yum.
He called it Eau de Vie.. Water of life, and used to make a few bottles every year. He gave me two at one point and I treasured them for as long as I could. It was a sad day when I finally finished off the last of it a few years later.
You can buy it in France and pay a lot of money for an old one but nothing was ever as good as that. In fact I remember buying some later on the internet so I'm gonna do that right now and have it sent to me here.

I pine for some very similar stuff from southern Germany. Proper Pear Kirsch. It is not sweet but incredibly flavoursome and and alchoholic. When I make cheese fondue I use the Kirsch with the cornflour in the final stiffening-it gives a fantastic aroma. Also great as penalty tot for losing your bread.
Difficult to get good quality Kirsch in the UK now. I get mine from a vintage whisky shop in Soho- but not a patch on the Germnan stuff I had years ago.
Amazing how many variations on the of Aqua vite theme there are. I will never forget some illegally brewed Oozo we had on a tiny Island called Symi-although it actually came from Lesbos. You could drink it until totally anaestatised and not have a trace of a hang over the next day.
just noticed some extremely fine bitter that has not been mentioned yet Timothy Taylor Landlord - almost definitive bitter, loads of taste and all too easy to drink.
