ooking a trackday in March is always a risk. Booking anything outdoors in Wales is always a risk, so booking a trackday, in March, 200 yards from the beach's on the west coast of Anglesey is probably a stupid idea!
I'd watched the weather reports for the last month on the BBC website, with monthly outlooks ranging from 'refreshingly summery', to 'a final winter chill'. What can you do, you pay your money and cross your fingers...
We woke up at 5:30 this morning and headed out to the van, in the horrible cold windy rain that hit us in the face horizontally, and set off on the 105 mile trip to the track. Upon arrival, we saw several tents that held vacuum packed campers, and 2 tired lads, Richie and Alex (!!!!), the lads we were meeting, who had been up all night trying to stop their Gazebo from blowing away into the wild Irish sea. Not thinking the day would happen, we pondered throwing our money away and, well, did nothing!
Aaaaanyway... It was to continue. The rain slowly stopped. We organised ourselve and got the bikes out, fuelled up, leathered up, signed up and waited for the briefing. Good old Hayden Phillips presented his polished Focused events briefing and we were underway, on a very wet, but very grippy track.
2 groups this time, 30 minutes each, perfect. Fast group went first to make a dry line for group 1.
Now, we got out there, and i've never ridden wet ground like you can on there. That track in the wet is so grippy it's unbelievable. There were puddles all over the place, wet tyres dotted about, not a slick to be seen, but it was still knee down action! Thankfully no need for waterproofs as the rain held off.
The sun came out on and off and the track quickly got a dry line. By dinner time 85% of the track was bone dry. It had turned from a miserable starting day, to my best trackday to date, and probably my best day riding to date.
I wasn't cut up once, i didn't see any injuries and i didn't see any trashed bikes. I did see one lad off another forum with his bike in bits, and the poor bastard didn't even get to go on track as it wouldn't start.
The track is amazing, focused events ran the day expertly as normal and we had more tracktime than we could shake a stick at. Donington was my favourite track until today. People may disagree, but i love this place now!
Obviously the photographer got a photo of me passing richie on the outside....He CLAIMS he was 'waiting' for me :bleh: hehe. Amazing day lol...
I really need a track bike now so i can push. Don't wanna trash my road bike!
