Kawasaki ER6-F any good?
      #26593 - 23/05/2008 20:17

I dropped my 10 at a dealers today to get a small misfire diagnosed and have ended up giving some very serious consideration to an ER6-F for the wife.

She's not even taken her test yet, but is determined to get it sorted this summer before the new test system comes in. Kawasaki's 0% finance deal comes to an end on 2nd June so we need to make a decision fairly quickly if the ER6 is to be an option.

The original plan was buy a beaten up old 125 for her and then move on up once a little more experienced. Now the thinking is buy the ER6 restrict it for two years and then once the probation period is at an end she already has a more powerful bike that she knows the history of and more importantly is already familiar with.

So what's the opinion on the ER6 and the plan? I've read good things about them and the dealer says that a parallel twin won't feel as strangled as say a 600cc four, but then he would wouldn't he. Any advice/opinions welcome, ta.
Which bike would be best to start with?
You may choose only one
New ER6-F?
Old 125?

My sisters husband was looking at getting one for commuting to work, they had a package with the full luggage set as part of the deal...I've never ridden one, but they do seem to be a good little bike, not intimidating or too Lairy....If I was you I would get it and just whack on the restriction kit.......the worlds her Lobster then........ as you say

The old, sensible me says get the 125, run it into the ground, drop it..... all the things we all probably did with our first bikes.

But, when yours breaks down, and you have to borrow hers, what would YOU rather be riding..........

I went on the launch, and it is pretty good actually. Better than an SV650.

On the other hand, why not consider the unfaired one (ER-6n)? I think it looks even better, and she won't need the protection really if it's going to be restricted.

Cheaper, lighter, and less stuff to damage in small drops too.

I think the N looks nicer personally.

The hornet's even nicer though.

TBH though the 125 may be the better idea for her to gain some confidence. Most people don't really keep their bikes much more than a year or 2 anyway, so you could just upgrade in a year or whatever. Remember you'll lose much less(if any) money on a 125, whereas with the ER you'll lose loads of money when you come to sell it.

Big Ham does have a point there, At least you can flog a 125 with relatively little depreciation, and if she does drop it, it's not going to be that expensive to fix.....Decisions, Decisions...Personally if it was my Mrs I would get the 125 and let her build her confidence on the road first, then if she doesn't like being on Two wheels you've not lost a great deal of money.....

Thanks for all the opinions but the deal with the ER has now been done, patient creatures women aren't they?

As to un-important considerations like financial, ease of riding, weight etc. etc. they pale into insignificance when what's really important to the wife is considered ie. looks and colour.

I'm just grateful that the dealer and I talked her out of the ZX6-R.

She actually found the ER easier to get to grips with than the 250 ninja thing and a couple of 125s shee's sat on in the past, must be the way the weight is distributed.

I like your idea xxrider about what I'd rather use if mine broke down but I think a ZZR1400 is def too extreme

So now it's time to get serious with the training, bloody hell I'm nervous for her........

Good Luck...get some Kleenex for when the inevitable occurs..... That said,I do hope she really gets to grips with the training and enjoys it..Nice One!

Talked out of a ZX6R by the dealer.....That is probably a very wise move.

She's already got all the gear, not bright orange admittedly, I don't think the fashion police will allow that.

In typical feminine logic/thinking though a new bike of course means she's already looking at new leathers/boot/helmet/gloves. I wonder whether Kawasaki do a matching handbag?

Latest update, just got her CBT today. Now it's some intensive training and then test time in the next 2 or 3 weeks.

She's enjoying it now though having got past that frustrating "I can't do this" stage that we all went/go through.

Sometimes feel like I'm still at the can't do stage after 6 years of riding!
