I can't comment on this particular case 'cos I wasn't there so I don't know. All I know is what I see on the roads especially when leaving race meetings and where large groups of riders are riding together.

Brains and riding skills often left at home, less said about that the better.....

+1
I didn't know or hear of this in the news so my thought's are with both rider's families.
especially the one rider's brother. I ride with my brother a lot and i don't even want to think about that happening to him, yet alone seeing it right before me.

"He said Mr Rowley could have been travelling at a speed of 40 - 55mph but it was hard to know how much of that would have been slowed by the collision."

Eh?

Maybe somebody with more brain than I currently seem to have available could explain the above to me.

Aside from that, I truly believe that one of the most hazardous things we do is ride in a group.
It takes more planning than just all jumping on and following the guy in front. For so many reasons.

Not least of which is that by agreeing to ride at the speed of the slowest guy, you don't put anyone under pressure to keep up. And therefor end up riding way outside of their comfort zone. And so taking wider lines than is safe around even the gentlest of bends. Which is most likely what happened here.

Granted, there is usually at least one guy in any group who is the natural show-off, but in my youth we just tended to let that guy piss off into the distance on his own. These types either found another group to ride with, or reined themselves in pretty sharpish.

I wonder how many of this particular group actually knew what their destination was - another contributer to folk riding faster than their ability safely allows. They don't know where the group is going, so they HAVE to keep up.

As an aside, I like the bit that says that bike accidents are frequent in North Wales. Does this mean that Brunstrom's tactics aren't working?

The simplest questions are the most profound. Where were you born? Where is your home? Where are you going? What are you doing? Think about these once in a while and watch your answers change.

More details of the incident...

http://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wa...55578-21302396/

http://www.thisisthesentinel.co.uk/displ...tentPK=21042808

Reading the report on the Beeb website, my initial impression was to be reminded of that sobering on-board 'snuff' video from Hungary that we all saw the other year, and nothing above changes my impression.

Two riders from the same group cocking up the same bend, entirely on their own minutes apart, one of them hit the scenery and lived to tell the tale, one of them died hitting and killing an innocent rider coming the other way.

All points about group riding made above are spot on in my view. And if you think realising you are getting sucked in to riding over your head is a bad feeling, try the sheer terror of looking in your mirrors and realising that a mate of yours is following you and getting in seriously over his head trying to keep up with you...

One thing that shocked me was that the rider that ran wide and killed the guy on the Goldwing was 52 years old. If he had been 19 or 20 it would have been much less of a surprise to me. But then, the last rider who I found following me when it was madness for him to do so was 48 at the time, so...

It's also not clear whether the bloke who ran wide should have been able to get round the corner at the speed he was travelling or whether he was just going far too quickly to get round. It sounds like the police don't know either because the impact with the Goldwing may have mucked up all their calculations which could only have been based on how far the bike and rider slid after that impact...

Evidence if ever it was needed that whether you are riding in a group or not, the most important thing is to always ride your own ride. And not ride like a twat. If that means everybody else in the group fucks off over the horizon at a million miles an hour with their knees down round blind corners then that simply saves you the trouble of having to tell them why you aren't going to be riding with them after all...

I went out with Tank and his Brother for a ride, as a little group, (Not slagging Tank or his brother off here, Tank's a top bloke)

Tank was trying his best to keep up with me, and IMO making some mistakes, that could have ended in Tears, so I DELIBERATELY slowed down . I have no wish to prove that I'm the fastest man on 2 wheels, and certainly no wish to tell someone that their nearest and dearest are Injured / Dead, because I was being a cock and trying to prove a point..Yes I can fuck off up the road at Warp speed if I want...but not to the detriment of others.

As for Tank's accident today...I've ridden with him, and for a Young Bloke he is SO safe, he's a damn good rider, albeit a Little inexperienced..but I would rather ride with Him, than Ride with someone trying to be the next Valentino on Public roads..

Tank , you know the score with me...text or PM me about the collision.!

I think that means they worked out from the length of the scrape marks and the size of the dent in the scenery how fast Mr Rowley and his bike were going when they hit the deck, but they have no way of working out whether hitting and bouncing off the Goldwing had already slowed him down much or at all...

Tragic I don't feel qualified to pass judgement but one of the reasons I avoid groups is because there is always some twat who has to ride above his limits. Too much testosterone.

Same here...Always one who has to prove he's the fastest/bestest/hardest etc etc...
If I go out it's usually with the Brother in Law, who's on a Hayabusa as well, or on my own...I've gone out with Tank for a ride, a damn good quick ride TBH...And I will go out with Tank again....He's safe and sensible...even if he's only a young Pup...

I like to think of myself as a lone wolf rather than one of the herd of sheep.

Check out the new neighbour. Just moved in next to our back door and seems to be staying. We had lunch with him/her today and it seemed totally unfazed by us. Coooooooool
