They've been nagged so many times to get a decent forum architecture so I'm guessing it's not going to happen.
This one is the crappiest working forum I visit.
Thankfully the content makes up for it.

That it is. However, I twigged something the other day - it isn't just Superbike, check out the online presence of other IPC mags. Everything from the knitting mags to the horsey mags uses the same shitty UBBThreads software, presumably all implemented on one central server somewhere, and centrally administered (for quite small values of administered, obviously). So, if the denizens of "Braying hoorays on future glue sticks Monthly" or "Joy of Knitting Weekly" know no better and are quite happy with what they have, our minority seething discontent is rather irrelevant. Also, the pervasive nature of UBBThreads and the way it has been integrated into the various different magazine webshites would make the project to roll something better out and migrate all the data across to it a bit more of a challenge (a complwete bastard actually) and an expensive, high-risk one at that.
SO in other words, IPC's Web Knobbers fucked up when they chose a forum tool, and now they (and we) are realistically stuck with it for as long as it doesn't seriously shit itself and start costing money to keep running...

If I had six months sharing a cell with you on remand, with nothing to do other than discuss how poorly IPC is managing its digital functions, we still wouldn't get to the end of it.
One of the main problems appears to me to be a strategic decision to, essentially, write all the software we need ourselves, in-house. This is good because we have control over it. But it's bad because it all takes ages and we're a media company not a software company.
Also, we're ultimately owned by a US firm, which is very sensitive about security and 'compliance' online. So anything we'd like to do on this website has to be given the nod by clever folks across the pond. It seems that this doesn't ever make anything happen with any haste.
But. Apparently there is some new forum software coming along. I'm not holding my breath...

This is actually the first error of IT knobbers everywhere and has more to do with empire building, egotism and an inability to admit a gross error than any kind of common sense. As you have no doubt noticed.
The driving conceit that is used to justify all this is 'We are speshhhulllll and different and unique, and nobody else has ever wanted to run a multi-product multimedia CMS driven publication on the internet before so of course we need to write our own!' - a conceit fostered by the IT Director who gets an enormous team of flunkeys and a huge budget and makes him or herself indispensable by owning the enormous white elephant that (barely) keeps the company in business.
Any superior control is illusory, because the effort required to change anything is so great, the resources so comparatively limited and the economies of scale so completely absent, and in any case, by the time you can think of something completely that would give you a unique business advantage, and incorporate it into your bespoke system, 9 times out of 10 somebody out there in intyernetland has already incorporated it into one of the off the shelf vertical market products that did 90% of what the in-house developed tool was originally planned to do at a tenth of the projected cost back when development first started, and which has a current version that has a clear supported upgrade path from that then current version that now does circa 250% of what the bespoke CMS actually does and growing, whilst actuially costing a 20th of the actual cost of the bespoke 'solution'.
It makes about as much sense as unilaterally deciding to grow your own trees, mill your own paper, and mix your own inks in order to differentiate your magazine from the competition. And works just about as well...

Actually if you click the instant mark up image button, once you've put the link in it slaps them between [image] tags.
img tags also work like they do on any other forum, but [image] is probably easier/more logical for those unfamilar with forums to understand.
