Craig Jones. Bad news
      #30235 - 04/08/2008 10:23

Press release from the team.

Craig Jones - obituary
PARKALGAR HONDA racer Craig Jones passed away at 00:32 on Monday, August 4th, after suffering a crash in the ninth round of the World Supersport Championship at Brands Hatch in Kent, UK, on Sunday, August 3rd.

Jones had been fighting for the lead in the race when the accident happened, leaving him with serious head injuries. He was transferred to the Royal London hospital but later died from his injuries, with his family by his side.

Craig, 23, from Peterborough, originally from Northwich, was one of Britain’s brightest hopes in World Championship motorcycle racing. In his career he won the 1996 British Junior Mini-Moto Championship, the 1997 British Senior Mini-Moto Championship, 2002 British Junior Superstock Championship and numerous race victories and awards.

In 2005 he finished runner-up in the British Supersport Championship before moving to the World Superbike Championship for 2006. In 2007 he finished fifth in the World Supersport Championship. In 2008 he was a regular podium finisher and contender for race wins and amongst the favourites for the Championship title.

Details on the funeral will be published when available.

Parkalgar Honda’s thoughts are with Craig’s family and friends at this time. Parkalgar Honda Team Manager Simon Buckmaster said: “It is with great sadness that we learned Craig passed away in the early hours. The team’s thoughts are with Craig’s family and friends at this very difficult time. Craig’s family passes on its thanks to all well wishers.”

I can't add anything that wouldn't be a useless platitude.

Sad sad news, heard it on radio 1 earlier. I drove past his truck on wed last week as they were on their way down to B/H. The only time i would have been quicker than him.

Condolences to his team/friends/family. truely a great talent lost.

Bugger. Thoughts immediately turn to family and friends left behind.
Like Chappers, I don't think I'm going to watch the recording of the race I'd made.

I watched the race on the telly, like a lot of us.
Condolences go out to his Family and Friends.

What a shame for such talent to be cut short like that.

Watch it up until the last lap, it really is a testament to how good and also entertaining a rider he was.

We were up near our fave spot before Druids for that race and could see the whole track via the big TV too. His riding was electric, so exciting and boded so well for the future.

I am a big Rea fan, but at times he made even him seem pedestrian. A tragic loss.

I may give it a go as you say till the last lap. Don't know why but I'm more saddened by his loss than any other this year, Similar to Ollie Bridewell last year and Nagai in WSB.

we should pay some heed to that comment although its of no great comfort to those mentioned-Motorcycle racing is considered the most dangerous sport-I dont care what those F-wits say about jumping off a glacier on a snow board-surfing in a storm, you know the so called X-treme Sports, whatever. Riders like Craig, Ollie and Yoshimoto(sorry if I spelt it wrong) and those before them knew the risks and were happy to take them. However someone here already said the tracks and techno how are so good these tragedies are rare. (Why only last year Robin Harms had a biggy at Monza(I think) I didnt believe he walked away)They are so, thats why they get a lot of media interest. Im sure these guys are up there and say ok-shit happens: lets rock on and see if and what we can do to improve things-I saw the vid and it happened the same way as a mate of mine years ago(ie the high-side)-he didnt survive. My only reason for this bleat is prehaps Brands with riders imput should look at that corner and see if there is anything that can be done to improve it. Me and no doubt loads out there wont forget Sunday-but Im sure we wont watch races and say" oh yea thats were so an so crashed an died". I will just delete the last lap but will remember it as a brill race with brill riders

I don't think it was anything to do with Clearways, or Brands Hatch, or poor Andrew Pitt (who must really be pretty fucked up by what has happened - Craig was a mate of his, apparently). I saw Craig Jones being Craig Jones and hanging onto a bike that was travelling sideways right on the lockstops absolutely flat out in a way that no other rider this side of Gary McCoy could even contemplate, and then he slide off the inside of the bike and was hit within the blink of an eye by Andrew Pitt's front wheel which he fell under. Anybody else would have highsided into the gravel trap a second or two earlier, but Craig obviously thought he could hold it. If he hadn't slipped off the inside of the bike he probably could have as well.

The tragedy was caused, then, by a combination of wheel to wheel racing on the ragged edge, and bad luck. But Craig Jones lived for wheel to wheel racing on the ragged edge, and luck is a fickle mistress.

Or, to put it another way, when motorbikes are raced, once in a while, despite everybody's best efforts, unbelievably bad shit happens.

And this was unbelievably bad shit :-(.
