What year? I would steer you towards the 600 anyway. Then I like 600s. Oh and welcome to the family.

Go for a 600 as a first bike...plenty of fun and fast enough for someone who's just passed/first big bike
ZX6R, ZZR600, GSXR6 , GSF6, R6 SV650 Etc are all good starters,,
Welcome by the way....we'll try not to take the piss to much..

My advice, based on one test ride so not worth much, is go for the 750 since it's there and cheap. Make sure you take an experienced mate to the sale to check it over. Or is it a dealer with a warranty? They are not too much to cope with if you stay below about 7/8000rpm. Not much heavier than a 600, not much faster. But it will keep you happy for longer in case the 600 ends up being too slow/ gutless.

Welcome.
Get the 750. You know you want to.

Sorry, that was the all new, reckless, irresponsible xxrider answering.
The old me would have told you to buy something cheap and slow, so that when you inevitably throw it down the road, it'll not cost you so much, emotionally or financially.
Yes, very sensible. Stick to 250cc, wear a high vis jacket.....
Nah, bollocks to all that. Reckless irresposibilty just feels so much better.
Sell the family silver (hell, sell the family), get yourself into massive debt, buy a new Fireblade.
You know it makes sense.

....mmmm
I am going to get off the fence on this one.
1.DO NOT buy the 750. You have not told us what type of riding you intend to do-commuting? weekend thrashes? carry a pillion? ride all year round? ride only when sunny?
So I am going to assume some stuff (forgive me if I am wrong).
1. You are an inexperienced young[?], male, new rider. If so the stats show that you are in the most likely group to have an accident. Add a very fast bike to that and the mix does sound so appealing. Get some road time under your belt.
2. You are also in the group most likely to get knicked for speeding and or lose your license. This seems to be because new riders have less spare capacity to look out for the various bits of joy enhancing equipment the police use.
3. Insurance companies know the above and will charge large amounts accordingly.
4. It is a bike with a very efficient fairing, this among other things, has the effect of making fast speeds *seem* slower (for instance a gixxer only starts real wind buffeting above 140mph on an unfaired bike you would have a great deal of trouble even holding on).
5. The bike is cheap. Why? A cheap bike that was more expensive (than say it's 600 brother) to start with, needs to be treated with proportional caution. You could be buying a nail and not know it until something vital goes bang. Then it gets expensive.
Sooo, I would recommend a largely unfaired bike. One that is easy to ride, happy both in town and on the open road, can be commuted on, can be thrashed and has a pleasant amount of torque that was not expensive when new and thus can be found cheaply now. That bike is the Suzuki SV650.
Four more things:
If you ignore the above, go for the 750 It has more power and that power is accessible lower down the rev range, is it is ironically *easier* to ride.
Make sure you have some good riding kit to *go with* it.
Do some more [fun] training, BikeSafe, IAM or california race school.

I totally agree with Biggles on this, he's hit the nail on the head..
Plain and simple fact is that YOU WILL FALL OFF! We've all been there and done it, part of the fun I suppose, the SV650 has a bullet proof engine and spares are a piece of piss to get hold of, and they are cheap...so is the insurance... And they are nice bike to ride as well......Let us all know what you get....

Nice one. Put crash bungs on if it ain't got them.
My Shiver fell off it's stand yesterday as I was taking photos of the dash and not a scratch. It landed on the seventeen crash bungs. It was on grass and dirt but it hasn't rained here for weeks so could have been nasty. I did have to peel off the Evotech sticker from the rear axle bung though. Tch.

Makka....EVOTECH is a Glue...a bit like BOSTICK/SUPERGLUE.
I know you say you want to "stick" To the road....but isn't that taking it a little bit to far?

Surely you mean that well known impact adhesive EvoStick?
EvoTech has to be something technical
EvoLution something that has yet to happen in US politics (but might soon)
Evolver (a womans rude bits)...

You have just pissed off everyone in the UK..... We all need sportsboats , not Sportsbikes...Most of us have stopped wearing Spinal Armour and have swapped it for a bloody Lifejacket!! When you ride through a PUDDLE and it comes over your boots , keep the rev's up so the water doesn't go DOWN the exhausts...never thought the Hayabusa was also Amphibious!!!!
