I have an R6 which I use for track days (Mainly at Brands Indy) and am thinking of changing the sprocket ratios to give it a little more low down. I saw in the mag that +2 on the rear would do this but I have also heard of people who say they have changed to -1 on the front and +2 on the rear. Surely with this set up the front would be in the air all the time. Anyone have any experience in messing with the sprockets?

Sorry, I had not read the earlier thread covering pretty much what I wanted to know. Interesting stuff! Having now taken on board the earlier information I will start with putting a 47 on the back. Top speed is not really an issue on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit but hear what has been posted about gear changes, dont want to complicate things. An extra gear change hear and there could have a derogatory effect on lap times. I am also a firm believer in the fact that the less you have to do the more efficient you are at it.

Yup, it certainly is!
Sounds like you've already read the thread where I asked about gearing. After much indecision I've put mine back to standard and will find out Thursday if there's any improvement.
-1 front & +2 back was just way too much for my liking, my left foot could hardly keep up with the gear changes. Sprockets are fairly cheap though so buy a couple of different sized front & rear and experiment. I've tried all the various combinations I can with my selection (15/16 f 42/44 r) and the chain adjustment is okay for all of them.
That's on a 2000 fireblade BTW.

Yes mate, read the other thread and tried to absorb the information. Have since seen "race" sprocket sets for sale with -1 +1 sprockets. Still do not really know what to do. What I do know is that I have booked my bike in to HM racing of Orpington for a suspension tune (I do not know what the previous owner did) to make sure everything is OK in that department. Whilst I am there I will bend his ear on sprockets and let you know what he tells me.

I ran -1 on my ZX last Brands Trackday and it was OK where as i previously ran -1 +2 on an 06 R6 the year previously which I also liked altho I never really found the perfect gear to Graham Hill Bend although I could out accelerate R1 out of Clearways. My advice drop one off the front that should be fine for now.I did consider fitting my +2 rear the Thursday but couldn't be fucked with all the frantic gear changes. Don't know if you remember the guy in my group who was running the Black and Orange BSS spec R6 he was on -1 front and +2 rear but had 130hp on tap.

I remember him. There were 2 of them both on R6's. Both going for it. Even when the heavens opened up they were both out there and still riding hard! I was nursing my wounds by then(and still am). I always try and watch those who know what they are doing, Just to remind myself of what a useless twat I am. Well, anyway, back to the sprockets. -1 on the front is the equivalent of +3 on the back if the last thread was anything to go by so I now have a good idea of what the possible change senarios will do. Probably make me fall off quicker

I don't recall two R6s the quick guys I recall were the Black and orange R6 white R1 and a GSXR750 cup bike when it rained in my session only the cup bike and a guy on a 954/929 fireblade were out that I recalled mind I spent most of the session in my pit garage or limping around the pits. Mind there might have been a blue R6 but I really only recall the guys that kept comming past.

The white one may well have been an R1 actually. In my mind everything going fast is an R6, Just makes me think "Why is it that I can not do that" The one thing that we seem to agree on is that they were both excellent riders and would probably be quick on any bike!

Interesting thread chaps....
I too ride an R6, infact I've just posted asking for suspension advice....
What do you guys consider to be 'quick' at Brands Indy?
I'm trying to work out if I'm rubbish, average, ok, or reasonable (I know I'm not fast as I still get overtaken by many...)
And finally- my bike has done approx 3500 miles on original chain + sprockets. Would it really screw things up if I changed just one or both sprockets and not the chain?
Cheers!!

you'll be fine changing one or both sprockets try -1 front first going up to +2 on the rear as well done similar to my ZX6 and along with the system map etc it's pokey enough to make the front lift a touch exiting some corners.

Just bought a new chain and sprockets. -1 front +1 rear and will put them on before next day out. I am still concerned that it will be a little lofty but what the hell, give it a go.

Chappers... You seem a man of much experience and knowledge!
If I drop one tooth front and go up two rear, that'll be an overall reduction of about 10% will it not?
Therefore top speed will fall from a geared max of 170mph down to about 153mph- which should still be plenty fast enough, but make 1st gear pretty redundant.
Think I'll give it a go on my existing chain then- as for sprockets Renthal or Talon?

they are both good I've always used Renthal but that's because they are so easy to get hold of I did the same gearing change to my R6 (06) and it ripped as for top speed I've got an excel gearing calculator that can be modded for your bike or try:- http://www.gearingcommander.com/ Altho this will only tell you top speed up to 14000 rpm. I think on my R6 it lowered top speed to about 150odd mph If tyou want the excel spreadsheet send me a PM with your email adress and I'll email it to you or don't have Excel then I'll dig out my old R6 manual and make one up for you. It may take some time tho I'm quite busy ATM. Update I've just been playing with the online calculator and you can change some of the parameters like max rpm wich I bwelive is 16,500 which gives top speed at 182mph but with revised gearing it will drop to 163mph so bank on about 150mph.

I timed some boys on Brands indy thisafternoon.Only R6s, The top riders (racers) were doing high 49s to low 50s as an average. I only timed 2 riders about 5 laps. I do not suppose they were pushing as hard as they might in a race but if you can get anywhere near that you are blody good!

49 is good enough to win a club race low to mid 50s is respectable.

Yes set the "minimum" RPM at your max RPM and it will show speeds down to where the program said maximum power is at. I think it needs to allow higher RPM fully but as a compromise it is still a good site. We set up the GSXR for 170MPH at the limiter and the calibrated Speedo healer showed 171MPH on the fastest sections at the 'Ring. It really helped with set up and now we have set the outright motorcycle lap record there with help from the simple gearing calculator. Not bad having a 600 lap quicker than any other bike regardless of size! But getting your set up right will really make a difference.
