Ok now this is going to seem a very stupid question to some but I am confused (it doesnt take much I hear you cry) I ahve got a 2003 R1, now this is the first Yamaha that I have had and things are a little different from my Suzuky's in that on the casing of the Suzi it told me that it require 2600ml of oil where as the Yam says 2900cm3 now for the stupid question....does that mean 2900ml? I was never the sharpest in the box when it came to maths and I would like to check before filling it up. I have got a Haynes manual ordered but I have a trackday on Friday so need to get some oil in the bike before it arrives. Any help is appreciated even if it comes with much abuse about how thick I am!!!

Yes 2900 ml or 2.9 litres.
Just had a look at my '98 R1 which says 2700 cm3 on the clutch cover.
I've looked in the owner's manual which states:-
Oil Quantity:
Total Amount 3.6 litres Periodic Oil Change 2.7 litres With oil filter replacement 2.9 litres
Now I'm getting as confused as you!
I can only surmise that even when changing oil and filter, there's always going to be 0.7 litres which refuses to budge!
I'd suggest doing an oil and filter change - topping up to the sightglass. Running the engine for a few minutes then topping up to sightglass again (higher mark especially if using the bike on track).
Oh yeah, when checking the oil level on the sightglass, bike must be vertical NOT on sidestand or you'll end up sticking about 4 litres in and start blowing oil seals like their going out of fashion!

Cheers Fast Johnny, It is easy to get confussed with all these measurements I think your right I have dropped all the oil out and replaced the filter so I will do what you have suggested and fill it until I can see it in the glass etc. I had a go at the clock thing you have suggested and have managed to change the rev limiter light which is good but it still reading KPH also nearly changed something else which I am not sure about so I may just wait and see what it says in the book to finish that job off! Cheers for all your help mate may well chat on here again sometime!

No worries.
Only other thing that occured to me regarding speedo. Is your bike a UK model? According to my owners manual, mph to kmh only applies to UK or US models. Model label on 98 R1 is under pillion pad. Check with Yamaha dealer quoting this number to see if your bike is an import or not.
Might be worth pm'ing chappers - he's usually got the answers to most questions on here and is a helpful bloke.

If you have changed the oil filter you will need more oil than a simple oil change. As FJ says check the sight glass with the bike upright on a level surface.
Also remember to check it *again* after you have run the bike once and let it cool down for at least a couple of hours. The new oil will be slightly thicker and will have "stuck" a bit to the internals-5 gets you 10 the oil level will have dropped a bit when you do the second check.

thanks to everyone who replied and helped with the oil problem, I feel quite silly now for asking as when I looked at it from a different angle it was quite obvious! Centimetres cubed is CC so when thinking about it like that it was obvious that 2900 was in millilitres!! oh well I changed the oil and filter put in some lovely Castrol full synthetic race oil warmed it up allowed it to cool and then checked the level in the glass topped it up as it was a little low then went and had a storming track day at Pembrey (well the afternoon was good one people had stopped falling off and getting airlifted to hospital!) If anyone knows the guy that had to make use of the air ambulance pass on my sympathies and hope that he makes a full recovery.

No problem, glad to be of assistance.
One of the very few tech questions that I actually could answer.
