Help. I passed my bike test last september and as a gift was given my father in laws "H" reg suzuki GSX600F. Trouble is when Im out on it and come to a stop at lights or a junction it idles really high for about 10-15 seconds before going back to normal. This is doing my head in and getting me all sort of looks from other road users. Any ideas?

Could be a mulitude of things from lightly frayed/dry cables to out of blance/poorly set up carbs or even worn damaged or dirty parts in the carbs. It is likely to do with the inlet side of the bike either fuel or air rather than electrical. Sorry I can't be more helpful it would be easier to diganose if the bike was in front of me but the above is where I'd start looking.

Thanks for the reply. When you say cables I take it you mean the throttle cable? My first thought was that it was something to do with the carbs also and was thinking about trying to get a new set of carbs instead of messing about with the old ones. Cheers again.

Check the throttle cable first. It does sound like it is sticking. This could be because of wear, because it is pinched, or routed incorrectly or even poor adjustment.
A little test would be to see if you can make it happen with the bike at a standstill and move the handle bars back and forth. If the engine speed changes, it is almost ceratinly the cable
Next stop, as the ever wise Chappers says, is investigate the carbs themselves.
I would not jump to new carbs just yet as in my only need a carb cable

Hi matey, I have to agree with Chappers. However, I had one of these as my first proper bike also, and had the exact same problem. All I did was re-set the carbs, if you can't do it yourself, you'd be better placed to take it to a garage and get them to set them up. Once done, you may well be amazed at what your bike can actually do. But, do check the throttle cable first!
