bandit 600 misfire
      #38700 - 10/02/2009 22:14

Bought my first bike last week a 2001 bandit 600. Problem is the engine misfires really bad between 4000 and 5000 rpm it also idles very bad and cuts out sometimes when cold. I have changed the sparks plugs, oil and oil filter but made little difference. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this?.

fuel supply I reckon.
So clean out those carbs.
Though if it has an aftermarket exhaust then they might need re-jetting.
But Chappers or others will be along shortly and they know far more than me.

Aftermarket exhausts don't usually make it run that badly.

It sounds like a fuelling issue to me, so check all the breathers and fuel lines are routed ok under the tank and none are kinked, and as said clean out the carbs. If it's been sat for a while they could well be gummed up.

The other thing it could possibly be is coils/HT leads, but then I would expect to struggle to idle regardless of temp.

Zone in on the carbs - most likely cause.
As you have a bank of 4 of them there is plenty to go slightly wrong.

I suspect one or more blocked jets (because of the 4-5000 rpm missfire), along with dirty air filter, the carbs being out of balance and the tickover idle set incorrectly.

One very left field check -it isn't a restricted 33BHP one is it?

I'm with the other guys on this... Bought my bike in July 07 after it had been sat for a while. Wouldn't rev past 5k until I cleaned all the green crap out of the carbs. There was at least 50% obstruction of 3 out of 4 main jets.

Sweet as a nut ever since...

No its not restricted. Are them carb cleaners that you mix with the fuel any good or do ye have to actually take the carbs apart to clean them properly. It has a scorpion can on it and there is also a hole in the bottom of the exhaust pipe. Would this have anything to do with it.

You'll need to remove strip and clean them whilst apart check all the float heights and inspect the rubber diaphragms on the throttle sildes whilst there there is a needle that hangs out of the bottom of the slide and fits into one of the jets check to see if it is stepped if it is new needle jets and needle are required. Then rebuild the carbs refit and balance them, you should be good to go.
Fuel cleaner won't work, although if the carbs and jets are well caked then soaking parts in the cleaner over night will help.

I ran a Scorpion on my ZZR600 with no mods & no problems. Doubt that or the hole would affect it this badly.

The additives help with keeping the fuel system clean, but would take too long to clear what I suspect has built up, if at all. Best solution is to get your hands mucky & clean them...

Besides which, you'll know if they're crapped up or you're looking for another cause.

Something else worth looking at might be the Vaccum hoses for leaks and perishing.

Too right Chappers... a myriad of causes with the same symptom...

Went thru my 9R with a fine toothed comb... putting the engine back in on Saturday after sorting a dodgy 5th...

Problem solved. There's a hose that comes out of the tank then splits into two one line goes to the bottom of the bike the other goes to the back of the underside of the seat, both are open ended. The on that goes down had a kink in it. Don't know exactly what these lines do. The air filter was fairly dirty so gave it a good wash out. Took the carburetor out anyway to see what condition it was in. Was spotless so just put it back in. Bike is running perfect now. Brilliant.
