Full system or not Full System-that is the question
      #38800 - 13/02/2009 08:46

Got into a heated debate last night with some guys over the benefit of fitting a Full system(header pipes-central pipe and exhaust pipe/s) My stanch on the issue was that the financial outlay far outweighed the extra bhp that the system may supply-my point was that in racing circles an extra 10th of a second meant pole or not,so yes a full system was beneficial. So fitting one when you just rode on the road seemed an expensive and pointless waste of time-the same went for the guy I argued with. He does about 70% road and 30% trackdays but the trackdays are not timed and not competative yet hes just shelled out 1500 quid for his 04 R1s new Akrapovic Full tit system + 250 on the PC. IMO a waste of money (he argued That I was getting a Full yoshi system on my bike-but then I told him its free-and besides I told him I wouldnt notice the benefit as I only do around 3 or 4 whobbly trackdays at the same time as him and at the last one we went face to face on(when I had the GSXR 750 with the half Gianneli system I was told I was only .8secs slower than him)So Have I got this right or is it a question of the jury being still out?

I think you're both right.

For most of us we won't notice a little extra power- especially on an R1 which already has plenty. We've all been overtaken by quicker riders on slower bikes, so that last 0.5% a full system gives won't do much.

But....

A full system saves loads of weight, obviously does give more power and with a nice fuel map makes the bike more enjoyable to ride. Plus the pride/bling factor!

I don't think we should begrudge someone who wants fancy trinkets (and can afford it) as this is their hobby/sport/interest.

Just nice if they're man enough to hold their hands up and admit in the majority of cases it's 'because they want it, not because they need it'.

PS I have a full system and PC111, and still get my arse kicked on a regular basis.

PPS I used to race cross country mountain bikes. That's so much worse for tech as you get a fit skinny guy on a £300 Halfords bike kick the arse of a fat bloke on a £5k full suspension bike at virtually every race!

I think on modern bike with cat that can't be removed or has a restrictive box under the sump weighing 4-5 kilos a full system has it uses as it will release the full potential of the engine, I gained 7 just mapping the exhaust overall I'm guessing 10-11hp and a shit load of midrange and saved around 7 kilos(about 53,000 calories of exercise) now divide that by cost £1100 you are getting about £100 -£120 per hp which is about right although Titanium isn't always the best way to go unless you want to save the extra few pounds. (equivalent to taking a shit before you ride) my Ti system cost £175 more than the SS akrapovic.
On a bike other than the ZX or 2006 on R6 say the GSXR600 where the silencer box and Cat bolt on a slip on is more than adequate and a full system isn't really benifical unless you want to race at a high level.
TBH on an R1 a Y peice and slip on system would have sufficed but it's his bike and his money.
I've added my dyno chart for my bike sadly no STD reading as I had a broken leg.

If he can afford it why not.

Even club racers could win races with a standard exhaust system, so for the other 90% of us it isn't necessary. If people want to do it, that's up them.
