Aprilia - would you buy one?
      #39338 - 26/02/2009 17:23

I really like the look of the new Shiver GT.

But I had two Aprilias in the past and both went wrong. Ok, one was an old AF1 125 but the other was a recent Caponord - and it caused loads of problems.

Do you think modern Aprilias are reliable?

Well I'm thinking of buying an RSVR.

I've had a Shiver for 14 months now and apart from the dash misting and a very minor oil leak right at the beginning which was all fixed under warranty very quickly it has been flawless. And that was the first one sold in Australia so could have suffered from the "first year of new bike shakedown" niggles.
It's a great bike which has been out for a year now and has had all it's first year niggles sorted out.
So very reliable, great engine, handles really well and is very comfy. The GT is gorgeous.
There are several exhausts available and quite a few safety and pretty aftermarket parts available.
I have Leo Vince pipes and cat eliminator on mine which sound superb and cut the weight by about 9kg. Increase BHP by about five too.
A 46T rear sprocket is a good mod as it increases the acceleration appreciably and you still get 140 (indicated) top speed. I have one and I've just bought a 15T front to turn it into a wheelie monster. Apparently it is easy to wheelie if you know what you are doing but I don't and want to be able to pick it up really easily off the throttle.
If you want to find out what many owners including me think, get on this Shiver (and DorsoDuro) Forum

Anyone know how long the facroty warrancy is on Aprilias?

How long is the warranty? Not long enough haha. It's 2 years, Bog standard. I'd buy an RSV4 simply because there is/probably won't be for a while (Mr Honda?) nothing else like it on the market. This isn't the case with every other bike they do. Google 'aprilia warranty' mate, then sit back and think ''Is this well styled, quirky, cleverly engineered italian bike that has, FUCKING HELL...HOW MANY tales of ridiculous waits for warranty claims and replacement parts, that much better than a Jap company/even Ducatis offerings with their head(dealer network) screwed firmly on? I doubt it. There are surely plenty of exciting options available this year in the catagory you are aiming at? It is the one getting the bulk of attention by the manufacturers. It's a shame to be so hard on a company that has given me so much pleasure, but they are in dire need of a shake up business wise in the UK. Here's hoping.

Shit, rant over, i just read yer question again...Yes I do think Aprilias are reliable. But as we all know, SOMETHING will always crop up during a warranty period with any/every new motorcycle. It is inevitable. WHEN said little problem occurs,YOU will most definatly find out Aprila UK are cunts for the way they can't deal with your possibly straight forward minor issue-there ain't that many bigger issues-turns into a fiasco due to parts supply problems and the 'mothership' being out of reach. You will have Anne Robinson on fuckin' speed dial my friend!

Can I also add that I'm in the proccess of giving up smoking, hence a ratty bastard, Sorry.

Did you deal with Metropolitan Tony? They seem to be crap. Southern are waaaaaaaaaay better.
I haven't read of any particular warranty problems on the Aprilia forum.
Yes they are a bit "Italian". But hey, it's an Italian bike.
There is nothing like it on the market and anyway Japs eat whales so you can't buy their products without being a whale eating bastard supporter.

Incidentally, Japan is mostly owned by american corporations so they are also evil in that sense too.

Nah, I was dead keen on an RSV but... my mate got one and I cant believe it, he has to bleed the clutch every 200km!! I know, your thinking must be something wrong, but look on the aprilia NG's. Nope everyones having clutch and brake problems solved only by endless bleeding.
His was a 2004, you'd think they have that sorted by then wouldnt you?

Good Morning/evening all! Especially you guys in the southern hemisphere... Makka, I'm away up in Ayrshire in Scotland. Metropolitan? Isn't that where superman lives? Even a shite local aprilia dealer would be better than bugger-all local aprilia dealers!

Makka there seems to be an army of RSV owners on that island next to ewe that believe they need to bleed ther clutch every time they put petrol in their bike!? Be a good fella and nip over in yer wee boat and sort it out for them would ya!? I've never had a problem with my clutch tyre_maori, that sounds like hydraulic witchcraft to me! I'd put some raven bones in yer mate's master cylinder. Or mostly use the clutch on the way DOWN the gears, surely then he'll get 400km to a clutch bleed (400kmpcb)?

Only a suggestion though.

yep i did Chappers 2 of the pain in the arse things also had an Aprilia RSVR on loan from the dealership that used to be located at the Paddock entrance to Brands now long gone.I found the Aprilia in the short time i had it a great bike to ride ,But as with most V Twins when i asked around at that time costs to keep them going seem to spiral taking the shine off them some what and what with at the time was an Aprilia spares shortage my survey said no.I remain a newly converted Jap fan and my Wallet seems to agree with me although i dont ride on the roads anymore and it is some years since i did,i would like to think V twins have become easier and cheaper to live with but i cant see me trying one in the future although there will always be a place in my lounge for a factory to look at should some money fall my way

Other than oil changes mine only needs a service every 12,000 miles.
That should keep the costs down a bit.
