Hi, some of you may remember the link I posted a while back about a charity motorbike ride I'm doing to raise cash for help for heroes. We start early monday morning so I would like to say thanks to all of you who have sponsored me so far. I will try and post our progress on here, but if not will put some stuff on when we've done.
Thanks again
Paul

Good luck, mate. It's for a great cause, too.
Oh, a bit of advice. Check your rear wheel bearing. Mine's just disintigrated on the M11........

Nope, mystery.
Bearing on the sprocket side was fine, while the brake disc side bearing was completely knackered. So much so that knocking it out from the back with a long drift resulted in the inner race flying out, balls everywhere, and the outer race still firmly in place!
Handy tip for extracting just the outer race - cut a peice of steel rod to fit across inside the outer race, weld it in place, then use the hammer and drift on the welded in rod from behind. Bingo!
New pair of bearings cost less than £10, plus £10 to the guy who did the welding for me. £20 and 2 hours work, compared to the Honda dealer who wanted 2 days and nearly £200!

Nice fix.
Weird that it happened-sounds like the bearing just ran dry-maybe it did not get it's full quota of grease at the factory.

Yeah, strange one.
New bearings are weel greased - I v.carefully pried away the seals, packed the bearing with fresh, new grease, and popped the seals back in. Looking at them, you'd never think they'd been touched. But at least I KNOW they're sufficiently greased.
As to the failure - I jetwashed it for the very first time ever a couple of weeks ago (Mega crud and salt encrustation after my new 130-mile per day commute). I'm certain that I was EXTREMELY careful around the wheel hub/brakes/drive chain area, but you never know........
