This looks like a much better effort than their last attempt...

I thought GRGR 1 was ok. We've given out loads of 'em over the last two years at the drop-in. I even posted one to makka, as I recall.
I'm expecting a delivery (soonish) of GRGR 2 and will be more than happy to post a copy to any forumites who can't get over to the drop-in this year.

Errmmmm......
If we can get back to Ken's original question.......
Comments on the vid. All good. All useful stuff. But.
Is it just me, or does he never, ever go faster than 50mph? Or does he durng the second half, after I'd nodded off.
(Sits back, and waits for the howls of horror from the Bikesafe shareholders....)

Official Highways Agency video, so exceeding the speed limit probably not ever going to happen in the published video. Still, nothing he said wouldn't work at more... err... realistic speeds on the open road. The town stuff was pretty spot on, I thought. Lots of places he could legally have gone quicker, not many it would have been very clever.

Most of it seemed like common sense to me, still nice to know that I'm kinda doing things right though. I wouldn't say that I know everything (every day is a school day) but most of that vid did seem familiar to my normal riding (except maybe the speed thing ). Wish I'd seen something like that when I first started out. Might be useful if they either show it during your lessons or give you a copy when you pass your test.

Yep, it was normal riding for those of us who've survived a few decades on a bike. But would a new or newish rider think of looking in shop windows to see if anything is coming to a junction? I thought it was really good and should be shown to every new rider to give them an idea of what they re going to have to get into to survive on a bike.

I thought I was good, anything to refresh the memory or maybe add a trick to the old repetoire is all good IMO, I find I'm often explaining the basic principles of advanced observation/perception/sensitivity to road suface/positioning to car driving mates who've had a run on the back or shown interest in the beer garden and think they'd all gladly have a look at the dvd. I don't think I've come accross those 'dragons teeth' before (probably just not noticed them, tend to have other things going on at those parts of a road?) so it's made me think a little look at a new highway code might be of benefit. I remember being told about Puffin crossings and pegasus crossings by a mate fresh outta direct access and thinking HE was on drugs or taking the piss... every day definately SHOULD be a school day an' all that.
I think anyone with a driving licence should get updates sent to them periodicaly, automatically regarding signage/road marking updates etc, there are how many very 'experienced' drivers/riders on the road who've never looked at a highway code since passing their test wearing flares or a cork helmet?

Very useful indeed. I agree, should be handed out as part of your CBT. A few pointers in the video that AREN'T in the Highway Code references. The 'Dragons Teeth' for instance - not a mention in the books or the online references, but can be found in the Department of Transport site under 'Gateways/Conspicuity'.
As for 'using shop windows at junctions' (I may be showing my age here) as kids we were given many tips by the 'elders' for riding safely on the roads, the reflections were one of those, and has certainly stuck with me through the years.

The GRGR 2 dvd will be in the "goody" bag that is given out at the end of the day at a Bikesafe (first time I've used the "B" word in a while) course in Sussex.
I will also be dishing them out at the drop-in this year.
It's all stuff riders learn on advanced courses (IAM, RoSPA etc.) and Ken has hit the nail on the head with a previous post about application of aforesaid riding techniques.
If it helps to reduce rider KSI's and promote advanced training it's all good in my book.

mmmm. Yes it was good, and I am sure it has been pawed over by very many editors to fit the target audiance.
That said I know my IAM and blood running instructors would have given me a bollocking for for being sucked into an uncool situation when the car pulled out a bit after after the window/mirror reference.
In that case I know if I had done that, I would have been buying the tea as part of his bike went over the solid white line when it could, they would have said, been avoided. Clearly it was a pinch point because of the cars parked on the left and the solid white on the right, to me he appeared a little caught out.
I think I would also have got another bollocking for never mentioning a lifesaver (only a glance). BTW, why no right turns in the vid?
I thought the open road section was better (except the very delayed overtake - I would have got another gong for not making progress on that one) but it was undersandable. I also liked particularly that his vision was clearly raised (but again not mentioned).
Commentary on road surface was sometimes a touch late + inconsistant, with too few observation links, for instance that hedge cutter was active so there would have been bits of hedge on the road as well as long stretch of newly cut hedge. A nod towards the build up of gravel/loosecrap in the centre would have been nice too in places.
I would also have been given a bit of a slap or not mentioning bike controls more-I think he mentioned changing down, but nothing about brakes/weight transfer, tyre warming or throttle control.
I liked his use of "sacrificing" position, overtakes etc very much. That put a clear positive spin on when you have to get yourself in a safer but undesirable position-would be a good excuse to white lining+car pull out situation.
Also very much liked the horse overtake-great to tell folk about that, I have often found myself at the end of a queue of cars who did not dare cross a white line in similar circs. Also good for when a slavish letter of the law attitude is not appropriate.
Yes it was very good but maybe not exemplary. Good safe ride. To me he looked like a very fast rider who was riding, almost uncomfortably slow/below his norm.
