Bandit air filter upgrade problem
      #39892 - 10/03/2009 21:07

well men. Have a 01 bandit 600. I got 4 K&N style air filters that fit straight onto the carburetor and replace the air box. I fitted them and they look great, problem is the bike doesn't run right now. Wont rev past 5000rpm and just splutters like mad. There was also 3 other hoses coming off the air box one of them goes to the bottom of the bike and has a plug on it, think its just a drain. The other 2 i put a foam filter on each of them. Does anyone know what the problem is or how i could get it to run right with these filters. Thanks for any advice.

Because you've junked the standard airbox the fuelling is now way off so you'll need to get the fuelling set up. Getting rid of the airbox alters the fuelling massively.

From what I've heard about individual filters they are incredibly difficult to get them fuelled correctly low down, and you won't gain much top end.

In my opinion put the airbox back on, fit a decent airfilter(BMC/K&N or similar) and get it set up for that.

It's far less hassle than to get it set up for the individual filters.

O, fitting a freeier flowing filter is fairly pointless unless you have a race can/full system to make the most from it.

On the three pipes, I expect one's a drain from the fuel tank overflow, one from the crank case breather and I'm unsure on the final one, could be emissions related, or a coolant breather.

If one of the pipes is a Vacuum hose that could well cause the problem you are experiencing.
I'm with BigHam re the individual filters waste of time unless you get it set up properly and even then they are a questionable "upgrade."

+another 1.

I lived with that set up in the dim and distant past and it's a bugger to get right (and keep right)-lots of tinkering with vacuum guages too.

Do what BigHam says.

The main reason i put them on was because i just like the look of it. Was,nt expecting much of a performance gain but didn't think they would have a bad effect on how it ran, so just not worth it. Anyway ugly air box back on and running fine again. Thanks for the advice men.
