Has anybody else had a Tsubaki Alpha 525 gauge chain snap on them? My Fireblade chain snapped the other day it was only 3 months old and had done two trackdays and some gentle road riding. The dealer i bought it from was sympathetic but said that it had to go back to the importers for examination, what got me interested though was that he knew the procedure because another Fireblade chain had snapped the week before.
Lucky for me it snapped while i was riding gently in a straight line and just after i had dropped my 11 year old off! an did not damage the bike too much other than snapping the casting for the bolt for the small sprocket cover Bit dubious about what the report backs going to be so trying to find any evidence of a bad batch
Thanks Andy

Usually Tsubaki have a good reputation, I guess you just got unlucky or something.

It was lubed an adjusted, but you would think that it should have lasted more than 500 miles with no attention really!

I've had tsubaki chains ofr the last few years. Current one has done 6000 miles and like the others is fine..
I think the importers are B&C who have always been spot on when i've dealt brought stuff from them.

You don't say what year Fireblade. As it is a 525, I'm guessing a CBR900 '96 - '99 (I checked B&C Express website). My GSXR-750-k5 runs a 525 also.
All other Fireblades run a 530 chain (typical for 1000's). 520, 525, 530 all have the same pitch, just the strength (and mass) are different.
1) Is the bike new or 2nd hand? 2) Are the sprockets original?
Someone may have dropped the no. of teeth on the front, hence more wear.
3) Lastly, are the sprockets in good shape, inline, chain guide OK and chain runner (on swingarm).
Remember to spray the lube on the inner run of the chain. You really need a centre stand or race stand.
I'm dubious about lubes as all they do is keep the O or X rings supple. A silicone spray would do the trick, but I still shell out my hard earned. Apart from my bikes, my boys have trail bikes also, so I've had years of spraying shit on (and cleaning it off!).

...oh,
4) are the rear sprocket (chain wheel) bolts correct and tight. They should be Loctite'd.
5) is the cush drive OK? rear sprocket.
6) is the front sprocket correctly fixed in place? lock washer with bent ear or grub screw?
Hope to be of help.

New chain an sprockets where fitted at the same time, cush drive was fine, and the chain was fitted by the dealer.

My mate had his front wheel come loose riding out of a dealers workshop. Aprilla RS250.
I've had a new front tyre mounted backwards and the weights fell off in the workshop. GSXR-750.
Both top line dealers with performance bikes. I don't trust them. Often they leave jobs like this up to the apprentices, no offence to apprentices, but if you've seen the spotty ones in bike shops here.....

I have taken my bike to a number of workshops to carry out various tasks which I thought were better left to a proffesional, only to find out that I could have done better myself. Had the same with a front tyre by the way. Kicked myself for not noticing in the shop! You just assume people in a tyre shop know how to change tyres.

I always take my wheels off and take them in. Bit of hassle but at least I know they've been put back on right, and I get a good deal form my dealer.

Had my bike in for a service last week and the dealer tells me that although the front tyre is rotating the right way it has been fitted on the wheel in the wrong direction. The dealer wasn't sure if having the front wheel turning in the wrong direction made any difference.I need a new reaqr tyre so I'm going to get the tyre fitter to turn the front one round.

Having the wheel fitted the wrong way round is not good. Wheels are constructed to absorb force in one direction more than the other. Likewise so are the brake discs on the wheel-some have a pronounced asymetric design. It is very important to fit it the right way round.

You need another dealer both brake discs and wheels have direction arrows for a reason.
