Moto2 - Possible Engines
      #40386 - 24/03/2009 07:55

Considering the lack of donor road bikes with cassette gearboxes, what will be the pick for the new Moto2 GP class?
MV Agusta 750?
Benelli Triple?
Will the pick be de-stroked larger capacity bikes to keep the Rod/Stroke ratio high?
GSXR-750 with 600 crank (horiz. split case with retained bearings)?

Any ideas?

Why do the engines HAVE to have cassette gearboxes, lots of the superbike teams manage with conventional gearboxes, I see no reason why moto 2 can't.

Agreed. That may be the result.
My thinking is the flipside, if WSB/WSS has survived without cassette g'boxes, why hasn't MotoGP?

Given the chance, I think a cassette is the way to go, plus with restricted testing and practice, a quick change 'box will be the way to go.

I add the GSXR as a horizontally split example, but it has the added benefit of not disturbing the crank bearings when you split the case.

The jury is out on cassette or not, but if it is to be a cassette, what bikes have one?
MV Agusta, Benelli, '07 CBR-1000.

Most reviews and spec sheets are shy of this info as they are shy of giving the rod length.

IIRC the Flamminis (WSB owners) will object if Motogp2 uses any production engine, as they have the rights to run production based racing-racing based on bikes available to the public..

Elsewhere its been discussed that one way round this would be for Honda, Suzuki , Yamaha et al to sell SP engines and leave the choice of frame to the team.
That way the engine was not 'production' - avaiable to the general public

This link from a post a few months ago might help.

Thanks, I hadnt seen that. Still begs the question where are the engines coming from or you take a production engine and throw a load of Ten Kate/Graves/HRC/ whatever parts at it?
Also it occurs to me that perhaps the FIM have told Flamminis to STFU about using production parts (engines)

I believe the main point to keep the classes separate is the use of only prototype frames. There has been a Spanish built bike tested recently. http://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/sport/...o2-bike-tested/ (sorry for the MCN link )
and Moriwaki have debuted a prototype.

The Blusens team that run Scotting Redding are running a bike in some Spainish championship.
IIRC there are a couple (one?) of other teams that have bike(s) running in the same championship.

Edit: Wrote the above before I clicked your link..

Because moto gp use prototype engines so they may as well make it easy for themselves to swap the individual ratios if they are designing the engine from scratch.

Don't quote me on this but I'm sure Zx6r have had cassette gearboxes for some time.
