Hi people, Its been a long time since i have posted on this forum.I bought a k7 750 gixer and became a "gixerjunkie".
Last summer i saw a guy on another gixer bin his bike on a roundabout in front of me.knocked himself unconscious and really scared the poo out of me.I went home that day and decided i was going to sell my bike.Thought i didnt need a 6 grand bike to ride on the road when i could lose it because of gravel.I thought i could live without bikes but it turns out i was wrong.bought a 99 r6 but now i am over the accident i am thinking of buying an 06 yamaha r6.Trouble is everything i read syas its a shite road bike.
My question is why? I consider myself a fairly spirited rider but by no means rossi.
Is it a crap road bike for expert riders that are on it 100 percent of the time? would an average quick rider like myself notice the flaws that are reported to make it a shite road bike?
Can i solve it with a screwdriver?
I was reading the used bike guide in *cough*fastbikes*cough* and they slated it as a road bike and said only buy it if you ride the track every week.
What i really want to know is can i ride it on the road happily or shall i buy something else?
Thanks Ben

It was very stiff but well damped IMO, softer springs are a good idea. I did down gear it -1 front and +2 rear it ripped, definatley a must for the road and useful on tracks too. If you like to poodle about not the best. The best advice I can give is to ride one yourself.

i rarely poodle but again i dont ride like rossi.I ride hard but not knee down every corner.I can never fully trust a dealer test ride because i have never owned a bike that was good for me until i set my suspension up.
I have heard another issue. Is it true that a slip on does not replace the cat and you need a full system ? Thats expensive !

The down pipes from the 05 fit with a little modding to the mounting bracket, it's supposed to be a good mod. The only real issue is setting up the power commander the one I had had an Akrapovic slip on K&N and power commander set up and was putting out 114hp at the wheel but thanks to the fly by wire making part throttle tuning nigh on impossible it wasn't running well on small throttle openings below 4k.

I can't comment on the R6 in particular, but when I bought my 750, I rode back to back with a 600.
750 won hands down as a road bike (and track bike).
I'd only want a 600 if I wanted a, as chappers says, a focussed trackday machine. In fact, I'd be getting race fairings and after market 'bits' for anything that could be damaged in a crash - then put the OEM kit back on for sale; hence, I wouldn't be so worried binning a 6grand bike.

Not actually what i said Brett, I like 600s as road bikes.

I should be a politician. ha ha.
Why not consider a 675?

Or a 636. :P
The mags say the R6 makes a poor road bike because it has naff all midrange and doesn't like going slowly.

if i had the cash to do that mate i would.i might do a few trackdays with it but i will mostly be on the road.I am pretty much decided that i will buy one.I love the 06-07 red/white but dont like the black bits on the 08.
Just trying to weigh up the cost.Do i buy a second hand r6 (06-07) or take the 0 percent finance deal on the new 09 r6.I have never bought brand new before.didnt like the idea of losing the money when reselling.I have always bought nearly new with a few thousand miles on.So i dont have to run them in or pay the new price.
What would you do?

As if by magic....
Don't fancy a 4,600 mile 2007 R6 in white/red do you?
Currently it wears a Harris Race Fairing, Talon sprockets, Full Micron system, PC111, Diamond tech rearsets and is 115.4bhp @ back wheel with the baffle in (according to bsd).
I have all the original parts in my garage bubble wrapped, so immaculate panels! I was going to sell the bike and parts seperately, but seeing as you've already mentioned exhausts, power commander, gearing etc you could buy the bike ready to run! I ride it on the road a'la daytime MOT style, but you could put the road bodywork back on and leave the race parts if you so wanted?
