OK here's the situation.
I run a 98 R1 with a twin-port blueflame exhaust which, I have to admit, I do occasionally run having forgotten to replace the blanking plug in the second port. Very remiss of me, I know.
I recently did an oil and filter change using a K&N oil filter and Castrol Power 1 GPS 10-40. Previously I have always used a yamaha OEM filter.
Whilst fettling the old girl, I decided to fit a K&N Air filter (new and sealed) I'd had kicking around the shed for a couple of years.
I took the old girl for a 30 mile test and have to say it was running perfectly (IMO) throughout the rev range. I have a stage one dynojet kit ready to fit if necessary but the question I'm asking is this:-
Am I likely to fook my engine through the carburation running lean because I'm using a hi-flow filter without jetting up? As I said earlier, the old Yam seems to be running sweet as a nut and, although I'm more than capable of rejetting the carbs, I'm wondering if I really need to?
Any thoughts or similar experiences, guys?
Thanks very much.

If it sounds and feels ok chances are it is ok. They tend to be jetted rich from the factory as it is. If it was running silly lean it would be popping on the overrun, lurching around, be a pig to start, and generally be running badly.
However if it is running lean and you do some damage to the engine it'll cost you big money.
Just to be safe nip down to the dyno centre, pay £30 odd for a power run and look at the air/fuel ratio. At least then you'll know for sure.

Thanks Ham and Chappers for the advice - much appreciated.
I must admit I did have reservations about sticking the K&N on and took it fairly steady at first but the bike seemed to be running so sweet I decided to pile on the coals somewhat and I was very pleased with the way it was performing.
I will take it to PDM (they're in Bexhill, I believe) and it'll be interesting to see what bhp the old girl is pushing out with 22k miles under her belt.
Thanks guys.
