Track Bike Tyre Time
      #40986 - 04/04/2009 09:20

I've asked this before but being stupid have forgotten most of the opinions, plus I now have tyre warmers (if that makes a difference)

I'm looking to stick tyres on my track blade next week.
Requirements are....

  • track only obviously
  • preferrebly capable of doing about 3 days before changing - Cadwell & Snetterton will def be 2 of them.
  • Dry use intended but I don't control the weather so wet use as well if needed
  • As good grip levels as possible within constraints of the other factors

I've sort of narrowed it down to Dunlop GP Racer D209s Medium Front & Back or Pirelli Corsa IIIs. Or would the Supercorsa Pros be a better option?

I'm also willing to listen to any other suggestions except Avon Vipers (that's what's coming off)

Thanks.

If it's a track only bike get Supercorsas or Race Tecs.

If you have to use it on the road too get Corsa IIIs.

I had 5 trackdays out of the same set of Bridgestone BT-002 Pros last year with warmers.

Piss easy answer The 209GP Racer Slicks they are designed to cope with plenty of heat cycles and are good enough for club racers. Whereas Pirelli supercorsas etc are only realy good for a few max of 4 days I think.

I like race techs and have used them a fair bit but find you need to work them quite hard to get them nice and sticky i have found that if you push to hard prior to getting them to working temp they suffer badly from cold tear, pulling the warmers off then queing to go out is a waste of time.I have used them in the wet in the absence of the wets on wheels that i now have and was pleased with them. The front on my bike lasts well but it doesnt take me lon to do a rear,I cant state that techs are any better then any other as im limited in the amount of types i have tried but im happy to stick with them.

Thanks for the replies, I've ordered a pair of medium 209s. Guess I'll find out soon whether that's the right choice, or not.

Just a different view.

I've been toying with the idea of track focused tyres also, not slicks, but have settled on keeping with what I have as I don't outride my tyres grip level.

I get some squirm at best, but honestly, I'm not 'spinning up' like McCoy or Stoner coming out of a corner, nor am I pushing or losing the front end.

I'm happy with the wear I'm getting (front and back), nice peeling, and I've moved this from off the edge of the tyre in a bit through a better riding style.

So when the rear really starts to spin up on me or the front gets to it's limit (which I know will be when it's too late), I'll change tyres. I'd like to get to that point.

I'm worried that better tyres will mask my own riding deficiencies.

Rider; my local track, Queensland Raceway is shaped like a paperclip, so right-angle corners, high speed straights. I'm sure if I rode Eastern Ck. or Phillip Is. then things would be different.

Wow!! Dunlop 209 GP Racers what a tyre!!

Remember I am comparing them to Avon Vipers though, cos that's what came on my track bike when I bought it, so my opinion is tainted by that.

The Viper front has always been planted which I found in complete contrast to the rear. That seemed it wanted to let go at the slightest provocation and although it was never worse than a slide (some big, some not so big) I never had confidence in them. They always felt like I was riding right on the edge of grip.

The Dunlops at Cadwell yesterday were fantastic. It's not fair to quote times on a like-for-like comparison basis because last time I was there I was having an engine cut out problem at around 9000 rpm so I could never use full revs, but my times were around 7 seconds a lap quicker.

I spent the first session just bedding them in and seemed to be constantly in traffic anyway but the rest of the day I kept pushing harder and harder but always came out of a corner feeling I could have done it faster. So next lap I would and the feeling was the same, could've gone faster.

The only movement I had all day was when I went down 2 gears instead of one and the back started to complain under braking but the rest of the time I didn't even think about them. I could just concentrate on braking markers and being in the right gear. Even when I felt I was going way too fast to make a turn I'd just turn it in and round it'd go which just encouraged me to take it faster again next lap.

Th wear was good as well, they weren't ripping up like the Vipers would but that may have been because I'd been fiddling with my suspension settings.

As far as I'm concerned GP209s are highly recommended.
