how can you tell if your clutch is starting to fail?
yesterday I was on a ride over the lakes and round all the twisty parts the bike seemed fine. on the way home we rode along a deserted dual carrigeway so i gave it a bit more throttle but getting into top gear the rsv just didn't want to accelerate

When you say didn't want to accelerate do you mean the revs rise but speed doesn't? If that's the case then either the rear wheel is spinning or the clutch is slipping. if the clutch is slipping then chances are it's shot. On the RSV you need to reguraly bleed the slave cylinder aparently, I've only bled mine once another helpful mod is to fit a smaller oil jet to the cluch the STD one is a .60 and can cause some drag macking neutral a PITA to select since 06 Aprillia fitted a .40 and it works less drag means less wear IMO it will fit all years I'm still waiting for mine to turn up. I found these guy's useful. If you do fit a new clutch I'd be tempted to go for an STD one.

If it didn't rev the clutch isn't the problem. Try explaining excatly what happened. The oil jet is under an allen bolt just above the oil filter housing the early ones had a .80 jet which was reduced to a .60 and from 06 toa .40 jet the larger ones are what causes the clutch drag and makes neutral a bitch to find. You remove the bolt undo the jet with a 4mm flathead and pry it out with a bent paperclip or a thin bit of wirethen replace it with the new one.

going up through the gears the bike seemed fine until it was in 5th where it did rev high but not accelerate so i changed up to 6th and it accelerated a bit but then it just stayed at 124mph.

sounds like the clutch slipping. If there are plenty of revs but no acceleration then that is classic clutch slip.

I'd be tempted to stick to OEM unless you've got a tuned engine. If you are having trouble locating neutral then yes it is a very good idea, Aprilia saw fit to modify the later bikes. They also fitted a bigger oil filter and housing which I've just upgraded mine with £20 for a later filter and housing. retro fits on all years.http://www.rsvr.net/ Before you spend any cash I advise asking for advice on the various forums there is a raft of info on the sites. thats where I picked up all the info but many of those guys have practical experience which is invaluable and worth a million manuals. http://forum.rsvr.net/ http://www.rsvzone.com/forums/ http://www.apriliaforum.com/forums/index.php This next one cost money to join but appears to have decent info and is the Aprilia owners club. http://forums.clubaprilia.net/

Barnett are perveyors of heavy duty clutch kits. Not worth it for road use. They usually make the clutch action much stiffer. Stick with OE.
