gsx-r1000 (valve and fuse box fault)
      #42116 - 16/05/2009 13:56

hi all, I'm Matt. new to all this. i ride a k8 gixxer 1000, it has just gone back to the shop because the fuse box has corroded so bad the thing would not start, when it was in there they also told me i need to replace the manifold due to the valves being stuck. the upshot is £2000 of gear needed to put it right(warranty thank god). has any one else had this trouble???

The valves being stuck?

I can only assume they mean the exhaust flapper valve(I find that hard to believe on a year old bikes unless it's been used through winter and never cleaned), I'd be amazed if the valves were the seize in the head.

The exhaust valve is a common problem. My K7 600 has a seized valve, trying to get it looked at but my local dealer is pretty shite. I believe Biggles has also hacd the same problem on his 1000. The down pipes are a grand as they're titanium. Mine has done nearly 10,000 miles in all weathers, been serviced like clockwork and had liberal dose of lubricant. Still fucked. Started after about a year.
As for the fusebox, can't say that I've ever come across this.

Welcome Matt (sorry I could not resist)

Ah the fuse box... when I bought mine I look at both it's position and how poorly it was made and sealed and concluded it was made in a cracker factory. So I sprayed the fuses with WD40 and "sealed" the fuse box with grease. Every now and I have checked and it is fine.

I also ride in all weathers and my exhaust valve went tits up after about 8500 miles-this has now been replaced under warranty.

If you ride in a lot of rain I recommend you cut the tips of the two black drain hoses at 45 degrees to stop back siphoning in heavy rain (these exit the left hand side fairing below the front sprocket). I heard there had been problems with this.

I made a protective sheet to cover the electronic bits under the seat as I noticed those were getting dripped on. Now water runs off to the left and right harmlessly.
