DFX Ducati's Regis Laconi is in a serious but stable condition after spending his first night in a pharmacological coma at a South African hospital following a big crash in free pratice yesterday
Laconi suffered two broken cervical vertebrae (C3 and C5), severe concussion and a contusion of the lung. A CT scan for eventual neurological damage, proved to be negative and for the moment he is in an induced coma and in a stable condition. After consultation with Dr. Maurizio Zorzi, the South African neuro-surgeon who was called from Pretoria to check on the patient's condition, it was decided not to operate immediately and to postpone any eventual intervention for a few days.
Barring complications, a further three weeks will be required before a clear clinical picture of the situation can be made, during which the French rider will have to remain totally immobile.

Just found this its looking good. DFX Ducati's Regis Laconi was brought out of his pharmacological coma last night and was immediately able to move his arms and legs without any outside help. Doctors at the Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg have decided to operate on the French rider on Tuesday.
The operation that involves the application of a plate to stabilize the two fractured vertebrae. The operation will be carried out on Tuesday 19th May, and Regis will have to stay a minimum of two weeks in the same hospital.
He should, at the end of the month, be in a condition to be transferred to Paris, where he will complete his convalescence. The other neurological problems resulting from the crash are also showing positive results.

Further news: Laconi is still in the Jo'burg hospital but surgeons are more and more confident that the operation was a success. He's no longer on a ventiltor nor is he in a 'chemically-induced' coma and the possibility of paralysis seems to be receeding. Hopes are high that he will be transferred to a Paris hospital in a couple of weeks. From what we can gather, Laconi hit the crash barriers after losing control of his bike at over 200kph. Barriers so near the track while there was a chance of a high-speed accident? Can't see MotoGP going there then...
