Honda charging problems
      #42216 - 21/05/2009 20:22

Suprise suprise
Brief outline, When riding my 99 CBR Fireblade with the lights on, the battery slowly dies and refuses to start the next time i try to start it, or just cuts out in heavy traffic on the May day run, not embarassing at all! However with the lights off it runs an charges fine.

When i put a multimeter across the terminals with the lights off I have 12.5 volts going up to 14 Volts when revved. With the lights on tho you can see the voltage dropping from 12.5 volts an no increase in voltage when you rev the bike.

So........ Typical Honda Reg/rec or generator or something else ?

Thanks in advance

Reg/rec is the best place to start.

I thought my rectifier was fooked, the local bike mechanic showed me a quick test to see if it is ok......

start the bike.... turn on dipped beam.... rev the bike whilst watching the light.... if the light gets slightly brighter when you rev it, then the rectifier is working.

If not then it needs checking out with meters etc. Not sure how to do that. but it may also just be a dirty contact on a plug to the rectifier.

its located under the right hand side panel, it is the smaller box and if memory serves me , I think it has some cooling fins.
