Suspension setup advice
      #42568 - 09/06/2009 18:19

The rear suspension on my bike is too stiff for me ( i weigh around 170lbs in gear )
Without wanting to spend a small fortune on a new shock or even having to spend money on a new spring, what would the advantages be for getting a specialist to look at the bike, over doing it myself? Is it a false economy, or considering the type of riding I do ( only moderately fast road ) would I be better off getting it setup properly?

I must confess that I now have nearly given up doing my own setup because I really don't feel I understand enough anymore as bike manus add more gizmos. Plus everything kind of interacts, so after setting basic sag, I opted to have mine set up for me.

Have to say it worked. HM racing did mine last time and it really helped plus they pointed out the best, most logical upgrade path. They have tried and tested settings for road, fast road and track, these they modify with you on the bike in your bike gear to allow for your weight and (I presume) the specific state of the current springs and oil etc.

I am planning a bit of a major upgrade in the spendy area and will have it done again. So I am sold on the idea of professional set up.

The only downside is that I don't like not knowing exactly how everything works and if I find a fault, I am now less able (or confident) to correct it myself. I should probably go back and read those SuperBike how suspension articles again.

Its all voodoo,666 and witch doctor stuff leave it to the Exorcist's or it will make your head spin.
But me being a tight arse i contacted K-tech who kindly gave me some base settings for my bike at the circuit i spend all my time at and it made a world of difference. My bike kept running wide but now i can hold a tight line with confidence.

Getting the sag at least set up correctly may help the stiffness by allowing the suspension to work in the correct range movement.
yopu can either do it yourself or pay someone it matters little although I'd say money spent setting up the suspension correctly is worth a box full of noisy cans.

Cheers for the advice guys, mind made up. I spoke with Perry at HM racing and he's gonna hook me up. It's looking as though it's going to be near a ton though, which seems a little steep?

For that you'll get your sag set correctly, if needed attitude of the bike will be adjusted for your riding style, damping optimised and a set up sheet with before and after settings. All your details will be stored on Perrys database and you will be good to call him anytime for advice on your setup, all the above will be done within the costraints of the STD kit.
Watch and learn.

Perry is da man-check his biking credentials-you will be impressed, and a very nice guy as well.

You will notice the difference on your bike afterwards. Have fun.

Make sure you are wearing your normal riding gear so they get the weight right.

Just a quick update!
Hooked up with Perry and his merry men today. As expected, really decent bloke and supremely knowledgeable about all things suspension related. I was bugging him I'm sure, but he was as good as gold answering any of the stupid questions I put to him.
Bottom line is, after roughly an hour of tweaking the bike is a revelation to me. I won't bore you with the spec sheet, suffice to say, as I have often been told, probably the best £90 I've ever thrown at the bike.
Now looking forward to the weekend to try and take advantage of Perry's efforts...
