Tyre pressure advice
      #42807 - 18/06/2009 17:16

all
need some advice. as I get quicker (average rider I intermediate group) was wondering how much pressure I should drop in my tyres. I run standardish rsvr with michelin pilots. I do not use tyre warmers. never bothered dropping pressure before.

what should I drop to and will I get much (realistic) benefit?

ta in advance

I run 31 front 29 rear with my GP racers. Have a look on Michelin's website and see what/if they recommend.

Alternatively the tyre feature supplement had the recommended track pressures. I think you can view it using that fangled online mag viewer thing on the main Superbike web page.

I've just dug out my copy and Pilot Power 2CTs are 31 front 28 rear as are the Power race.

We have tyre pressure guides from most of the big manufactures, though there is no rule of thumb, it does look like the average is to lower the presures
rear by - 7-10 psi
front by - 5-7 psi
that said, even if you have lowered your pressure's & the tyre still chew's up you will then have to look at your suspension set-up to get the best out of the tyre

your benefits are that the tyre you use with the pressures recommended are for road use, track use the tyre is used differently & @ higher temperatures, so with lowering the pressure, you should arrive at using the tyre more within its design parameters,

sorry to say it is still a fine art & that the pro's don't always get it right

start with the basics & have fun, remember a couple of sighting laps, & within a 20min session you & your tyre perform best between the 5 & 15 min part, so when you tire ease off a bit to finish.

have a good season
