2008 Speed Triple

Simon's in the Canary Islands, sampling what Triumph's new 2008 Speed Triple is like. It may look pretty similar to the old model, but what's it really like? Simon takes over the story.
“Well, I wouldn't be in a rush to chop in my old Speed Triple for this 2008 version. In essence, the 2008 model is a minor restyle and an upgrade of some key components, but the heart and soul of the Triple remains. After all, what would you do to improve it?
The meaty and magnificent engine remains as was, so does the chassis, with just a re-worked rear end, new wheels and upgraded Brembo brakes to make a subtle improvement on the current model.
“A day blasting round Lanzarote was a blast, despite the best efforts of the local constabulary, and the changes to the bike have not impaired its best feature – the ability to wheelie forever. The wind is a constant in the Canaries, but even this blast couldn't put off the Triumph, whose natural poise is on its rear wheel.
“I'll tell you more in the magazine, but if you're ready to go down to the shops today (the bikes should be in dealers in a week or so's time) then be prepared to experience a bike very similar to the current model. Iconic, brilliant fun, flexible – but not startlingly different. It's going for £7,999, but put aside some money for the fines you'll have to pay.”
