Arlen Ness Ladies leathers

July 3, 2008 - Jayne Toyne

This has been my main trackday suit for the past four years now so it's seen some action. It's covered a fair amount of miles too as I use it not just on track but on road, especially in summer due to its well ventilated panels. The fit is designed especially for women and it is one of the earliest Arlen Ness suits that came into the country so it may well have been redesigned by now.

It's size medium and is quite a snug fit on my size 10/12 pear shaped frame, these suits go up to a size XL which works out at a 16. There isn't a lot of room in the chest area for women of typically English proportions but this doesn't affect me thankfully and I can usually squeeze an extra back-protector in if I'm having a thin day.

The main zip broke after a week because it wasn't man enough for the job and it was replaced with a heavy duty one, the leg zips died a few months later and were duly replaced with better ones. The hip armour is made from memory foam and annoyingly folds over on itself when pulling the suit on. Most times I put the suit on I have to dig around and straighten these out, when they're sitting flat they are very comfortable, but when they're not the discomfort is unbearable.

The other big downside to this suit is the liner. It isn't removable so washing it is a major pain in the arse. The plus sides though are the reasons I have persevered with this suit. The fit is spot on for me, it's comfortable, it's ventilated so I don't get sweaty, the armour fits just right and the stretch fabric panel at the back of the neck is excellent. The logos and pink flowers were added at my request by a specialist leather company (not Arlen Ness) to brighten up an otherwise stealthy looking suit.
