Dainese Back Space 1-2-3

June 10, 2008 - Kenny Pryde

OK, so I'm getting older, crankier and ever more upset by the appalling driving I witness. To this end I ride with more safety kit on than most – always boots, always gloves and almost always this Dainese Back Space 1-2-3 back protector. Yes, even on the ride to and from work, I wear a back protector.

Why wouldn't you? Do you think your back needs less protection in town, riding at subsonic speeds? All I see are kerbs, trees, roadsigns, lampposts and I want to give my back a chance. This is the lightest, best-fitting and least obtrusive back protector I've worn. It appears to offer decent protection. It's articulated plastic with an aluminium honeycomb frame with enough Velcro and adjustment to ensure a snug fit. I've crashed a couple of times with it on, but never at any speed or with consequences to bother the medics. I reckon the best back protector is the one you wear as a second skin without noticing it. That makes this one the best I have used. The shoulder straps are starting to get a bit saggy but the waist belt keeps everything in place anyway.
