Shoei XR-1000 Helmet

June 10, 2008 - Tom Lawrance

Like all Shoeis, this Haydon-rep XR-1000 comes with a 'Pinlock' visor insert. This works a bit like double-glazing, but you wont have an acne-faced little shit of a salesman pestering you to buy it. Its surface is perforated with millions of tiny holes, which absorb the moisture and give me a clear view on those wanky wet mornings.

At about 1,460g it's lighter than more expensive lids like the Arai RX-7 and the Suomy Extreme. Visor removal is ridiculously easy – you move a small lever and it literally falls out. On the down side, you can't get a chin curtain for this model, so at high speeds it gets a bit noisier than I'd like. But the fact that this lid is so easy to use means I'll be wearing XR-1000s for a while yet.
