The RR was first launched in 2003, and in 2005 it got more midrange, upside down forks and radial brakes. For 2007, the RR gets another overhaul, with an all-new engine and even sharper styling. Probably the most impressive aspect of the new CBR600RR is its 155kg dry weight claim. That sort of mass comes close to Aprilia's RS250, and lighter bikes are generally better bikes in every way. It looks tiny now, but it retains the semi-committed riding style, compact bars and firm suspension.
The hyper-compact motor feels smooth, and strong at the top-end. The CBR is revvy, but not peaky, and once you get used to that expanse of revs, it all falls into place. There's predictable drive all through the rev range, so if you get a gear choice less than spot-on, you'll still make it round. The fuel injection is impressive, too, metering the power in a slick, professional fashion – there's no hint of the snatchiness that used to blight the old model.
The gearbox is slick too. Handling is outstanding, and that clever new electronic steering damper tucked away down below is nigh-on impossible to detect. The whole chassis feels right – the narrow bars, easy riding position, broad spread of power and lithe form. Unlike most other bikes in its class, the CBR doesn't get a slipper clutch – but then we never really missed it. In fact, this was the cream of the crop of the 2007 600cc supersport bikes for us.
