England's finest – and last year's '600' test winner. This year (2007) it only just got pipped to the top spot in the group test by Honda's superb CBR600RR – testament to the outstanding job Triumph has done on this machine.
Triumph finally got its supersport right by sticking to what it knows, ie three cylinder engines. That trio of 225cc cylinders pumps out a strong dose of torquey grunt that won our hearts in 2006, especially since it lived in a capable, sporty chassis that could cut in on track as well as on the road. Once you added in the classy styling and indefinable 'soul' it so clearly possessed, the Hinckley flyer managed to stand out against the best Japan could offer.

For 2007 the Triumph gets only new paint schemes – and despite two revamped machines in the class, it still has more stomp everywhere in the rev range than any of the other sports '600's. This makes it a much more relaxed, pleasing affair to ride on the road. Overtakes seldom need a gearchange, and once you adjust to the weird blue LED rev light, there's nothing but pleasure from the 12-valve triple. It's much easier to wheelie off the gas than the reviver fours, and the flatter torque curve helps mediocre wheely-merchants like me optimise our mono-skills with ease.

Chassis-wise, the steering is light and neutral, and the suspension is firm, but not unnecessarily so. The brakes are powerful and progressive, and the whole handling package lives up to the engine, putting the little Daytona right up there with the best of them.
