The BSB race winning Kawasaki ZX-10R
Not everyone can win a British Superbike race, but anyone can own a BSB race winning bike. That’s exactly what we have here. This 2015 Kawasaki ZX-10R was the very bike that James Ellison won the first race at Donington and then followed up with a double win at the Brands Hatch round. The JG Speedfit team were supported by Kawasaki UK.
Winning BSB races doesn’t come cheap, quite the opposite. We sat down with Mark Smith Halverson team principle for the JG Speedfit Kawasaki team in 2014 to get an insight into exactly how much it costs to go racing. In short, it takes more than a set of plastics and a full exhaust to run at the front of the best domestic race series on the planet.
This bike has a fully documented build and is littered with the kind of parts that most track day regulars could only ever dream of. The engine was built to BSB spec by JT Developments and produces 202bhp and 87ft/lbs of torque at the wheel. It was recently serviced by Pete Clifford at Actiforce Racing, new fluids and filters were fitted, along with a lightweight race battery.
FGR Ohlins forks and a TTX shock compliment the stiffened chassis and KR swingarm. If you were buying new, the previous sentence you’ve just read would genuinely cost more than the reserve that’s been set on this bike.
The Ellison ZX-10R is fitted with the same Motec ECU it had when it was last raced. The SDL3 dash is running v2.60x software. In terms of datalogging, the ZX-10R has GPS, wheel speed sensors and a potentiometer on the forks. The bike has been set up on the dyno in the current guise, the power and torque figures quoted are as per this set up. The current set up is one that no longer requires a software technician every time the bike is used, as per when it was raced. It has been set up with the dedicated track day rider or racer in mind.
The bike has Brembo monobloc brakes and an RCS Master Cylinder. OZ Racing wheels, a full Akrapovic exhaust and countless other trick race goodies. The list is almost endless and we encourage you to study the images closely. What’s important to remember here is that the bike was built by a team that were pushing to win a BSB title and the quality of the build reflects this. It is also important to remember that this is a race bike and as such, the paintwork should not be considered as immaculate. If you’ve read the link above, you’ll understand that the team had to be prepared for one race bike to potentially need three or four sets of plastics per weekend.
Getting 200bhp from a 1000cc sports bike has become almost normal nowadays and there are certainly plenty of 200bhp ZX-10Rs out there. It’s highly unlikely that there are many built to this specification though and it’ll be nigh on impossible to find one that has had the Champagne flavoured success of multiple race wins washed off it like this one. This ZX-10R has a guide price of £20,000 - £22,000.

James Ellison has been kind enough to offer his services for a day on track with the new owner. He’ll help understand the bike, share his detailed knowledge of riding it, help get it set up to suit the new owner and provide whoever the lucky pilot is with a unique day on track. This is a no cost option and is included in the purchase price.
