Rucksacks aren’t the most exciting thing to test. They don’t make a noise, make you go faster or make you more attractive to the opposite sex. But on a commute or long distance touring they can be a life-saver. Tank-bags and tail-packs are the easiest luggage companions with their magnetic attachments or clip-on straps but they don’t hold a great deal. Certainly a pair of socks, wash bag and a couple of t-shirts is your lot. Rucksacks come in all shapes and sizes and modern equipment can hold an entire weekends clothing and essentials without feeling like it will drag you off the bike. Kriega have been around for well over a decade now and have evolved into the industry leader in two-wheeled back packs.

We have been using this R30 system for the past six months now and were pretty impressed with it. It has a 30 litre capacity, fully waterproof lining and quadlock straps. The straps are patented and are designed to spread the weight so you don’t get stressed shoulders as can happen with regular shoulder straps and heavy loads. This latest design of rucksacks has the fold down tops which, on first appearance aren’t exactly stylish – more like a student’s college satchel but it’s an effective way of keeping the rain out for a 100% waterproof seal. New for 2013, Kriega are pleased to announce its tie-up with Forcefield body armour. As an official accessory they can supply a level 2 back protector for extra protection (£45.00). With the usual pockets and hi-viz logo’s the Kriega doesn’t come cheap at £135 but it does afford you the luxury of being the only luggage you may need.
