A weekend of champions

Another British champion in the World Superbike paddock and the British Superbike championship was decided in less than optimum conditions.

Tom Sykes was crowned World Superbike champion after finishing 3rd in yesterdays race at Jerez. During the race, the battle at the front raged between Eugene Laverty and Marco Melandri, Laverty eventually took the win by riding round the outside of Melandri at the final corner.

In British Superbike Shakey Byrne and Alex Lowes battled throughout the weekend for the championship despite the poor weather conditions. Josh Brookes dominated the weekend with a pole position and all three wins, but the championship was already out of reach. Lowes took second and Byrne took third in race one, putting Byrne three points behind. Race two saw the track half drying and the boys went out  on intermediate tyres, Lowes was the first to go down, shortly followed by Byrne. As Lowes didn’t complete a lap he got to start race 3 from 9th, where Byrne’s laptime had him start from 22nd. Byrne went from 22nd to 13th in lap one and before long it was a head to head battle for the championship, in the rain, to the finish. Lowes eventually took the lead and the championship
